Page 5-THE NEWS-February, 1986 Hebrew Academy News Interim Director Appointed By Board Students Present **Daniel Is Dreaming A Dream*’ By Arny Pickholtz The Board of Directors of the North Carolina Hebrew Academy has appointed Mrs. Berta Straz as Interim Direc tor of the school. Eleanor We* inglass, who served as direc tor, retired in December due to illness. Berta has spent most of her life in Charlotte and is the daughter of Abe and Rose Luski. She graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and attended the Hert- zlia Jewish Teachers sem- in£u*y. New York City, receiv ing a degree in Jewish Literature with special em phasis in the study of Judaica and Yiddish culture. After graduation she studied at the Chayim Greenberg Institute in Jerusalem, where she com pleted her studies and was, subsequently, awarded a teaching accreditation from Israel’s Ministry of Edu cation. Mrs. Straz returned to the U.S. in 1975 and worked in New York where she met her husband Moshe and had her first child, Florie. In 1977, she moved back to Charlotte with her new family and had her se cond child, Michelle. Following a brief stint at home with her young children, Berta began to work at Temple Israel’s nursery school where she (A play adapted by Ziva London & Tammy Bernat) t Berta Straz with daughters. created a song and dance pro gram designed to help teach the Hebrew language. She joined the Hebrew Academy feunily as an active board member in 1983 and served as president of the PTA in 1985. “One thing that I want,” Berta says, “is for the school to be involved in this com munity. There are five major holidays coming up this year, and I would like to do some thing individualized for each one of them. We also must prepare for the exodus to our new facilities at Shalom Park. This is a crucial transforma tion and the children are very excited about the move. Shgdom Park is becoming a focal point for this communi ty and we should all take ad vantage and support the idea of all the Jewish people in Charlotte living as one big happy family.” Colee Curtis (L) and Seth Pickholtz (R). Academy RatHe This year’s Hebrew Academy raffle was a huge success. The Academy sincere ly thanks the entire Charlotte community for their coopera tion. A special thank you goes to chairperson Roz Seged who contributed her time and a tremendous amount of energy. The grand prize, a VHS video recorder, was won by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Segal. They generously donated the prize back to the school. The Academy through a trade was able to receive a much needed commercial vacuum cleaner, three tape recorders, and several computer disks. Passover in February? “Whoever is hungry, let them come and eat. Whoever is in need, let them come and conduct the Passover Seder. ” — Haggadah Passover may not be around the corner, but the Hebrew Academy is getting ready for this year’s Passover Food Sale. Over the years, Joe Steiner and friends of the Academy have helped hun dreds of area Jewish families stock their favorite Passover goodies. This year the sale will be conducted in conjunction with Phil’s Deli in Cots wold Mall. This partnership will en sure the greatest selection of merchandise with a minimum of backorders. So, sit down right now, plcm your Passover feasts and treats and make a long list for the 1986 Hebrew Academy Passover Food Sale.
