Help Our
Community.
Be a Volunteer.
Operation Snowflake
On Christmas eve and
Christmas day, B’nai B’rith
lodges across the state spon
sored Christmas Substitution
programs. Jewish volunteers
hlled non-critical jobs so that
staff members and volunteers
in hospitals could enjoy
Christmas with their families.
Here in Charlotte, the pro
gram has been a tradition for
about 20 years. This year,
almost 70 men and women
from the Jewish community
volunteered to help in hospitd
emergency rooms, at reception
desks, information desks,
nurses stations, and filed x-
rays. At the County Jail,
volunteers worked in booking
and gate operations. The pro
gram was organized this year
by Steve Menaker, with help
from Sandy Benjamin, who ar
ranged for volunteers at Mer
cy and Mercy South Hospi
tals, and from Lloyd Scher,
who arranged for media
coverage. Many thanks to
everyone who volunteered.

Israel Bonds Hits All-Time High
A total of $604,249,250 in
cash for Israel’s economic
development was mobilized by
the State of Israel Bond
Organization in 1987, setting
a new all-time record for its
sales of bonds in a single year.
The announcement was
made by David B. Hermelin of
Detroit, International Cam
paign Chairman; William
Belzberg of Los Angeles,
North American Chairman;
and Julian B. Venezky of
Peoria, Illinois, Chairman of
the Board.
In their statement, they ex
pressed “special pride in the
Bond Organization’s accom
plishments in a year which
saw a sheu-p decline in the
stock msirkets, as well as other
difficulties which came at the
peak of the campaign.”
The Israel Bond leaders
reported that the 1987 Israel
Bond response “demonstrated
the close partnership with
Israel and its people by Jewish
communities, as well as by
non-Jewish friends of Israel, in
all the countries where we con
duct Bond campaigns.”
They added, “It also ex
presses the confidence of
thousands of institutional in
vestors, including banks, pen
sion funds and other employee
benefit funds, who invest in
our securities, in Israel’s
economic stability.”
In a message to Israel’s
Finance Minister Nissim, they
joined with other key officers
of the Bond Organization in
expressing the hope that “our
outstanding 1987 Bond re
sults will help Israel to con
tinue moving forward from the
economic stability achieved
this past year to new growth.”

Dr. Relic was Guest Speaker
The Charlotte B’nai B’rith
Lodge was proud to have Dr.
Peter Relic, Superintendent of
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
School System, speak to our
organization on Jan. 27 at the
Royal Palace. Dr. Relic re
ceived his doctorate from Har
vard University and served as
Superintendent of the West
Hartford, Connecticut School
System for seven years before
moving to Charlotte in 1987.
Holiday Party
Between 35-50 people at
tended last month’s holiday
membership party at the club
house of the Fairington-II
apartments. New, old and pro
spective members enjoyed the
music of a DJ, drank soft
drinks and beer, and snacked
on a variety of foods. The par
ty was largely successful
because of the efforts of Peter
Levinson, Jeff Turk and Sam
Bernstein. Thanks to those
who brought food and helped.

lodge? Call Jeff Turk,

HADASSAH STUDY GROUP
Wednesday, February 24, 1988
7:30 p.m.
The Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah cordially in
vites you to join us for an evening of wine and cheese
with Jerry Ingalls, Associate Professor of Geography
at UNC-C. Dr. Ingalls, a respected scholar of the mid
dle East Crisis, v/ill share his views on the explosive
topic;
West Bank: Palestinian or Israeli?
Should Israel reclaim the West Bank, or should she
allow the creation of a Palestinian state? Can the land
be traded for peace? Is there a peaceful solution to
Israel’s seemingly no-win situation?
Don’t miss this thought provoking discussion!
