The building, confiscated in the prewar Stalin era, will soon be officially restored to Jewish ownership, according to Ltshkas Ezras Achim, a Brooklyn-based organization connected to the Chabad Hasidic movement that ministers to the religious needs of Jews in the Soviet Union. The occasion for the revival was the Shavuoth holiday. The Orthodox service was attended by 1,200 worshippers, said Rab bi Moshe Levertov, spokesman for the group. He said he recalled vividly the day in 1938 when, as a boy in Moscow, he saw the authorities seize the synagogue. They dis tributed its Torah scrolls among shoemakers biit allowed the Bibles and prayerbooks to be transferred to other synagogues, he said. Levertov said that after Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev introduced the liberal policies of glasnost, the Chabad communi ty in Moscow applied for the synagogue’s return to its former owner. The transfer was approved in mid-May by the Moscow City Council and will be completed in three months when the shul becomes the property of Agudas Chabad, Meanwhile, the community was allowed to conduct services in the building. “Word got around, and 1,200 people showed up,” Levertov said. According to Levertov, Lish- kas Ezras Achim has been active for 28 years on behalf of Soviet Jews. Until the glasnost era, it operated underground, he said. The Charlotte Jewish Pre school celebrated the graduation of its outgoing class of four-year- olds and pre-kindergartners. Parents, teachers and students gathered for a special ceremony during which the children sang a selection of thoughtful Hebrew and English songs for the visiting parents. Preschool teachers presented an emotional, compel ling slide show of the students involved in a variety of activities throughout the year. The day’s events concluded with a gradu ation cake and refreshments for all. For Chanukah, we decorated the Jewish Community Center and also put up banners and posters throughout the Blumenthal Ed ucation Building. One of our year-long goals was to send each member of the school a birthday greeting from the board. Karen Schuller, our corresponding secretary, was in charge of this project. Toward the middle of the year, we adopted three needy families through Jewish Family Services. Each grade (eighth Temple Israel Welcomes Rabbi White Temple Israel welcomes Rab bi H. Scott White as its new spiritual leader. Rabbi White, his wife Civia and their infant son, Jacob, arrived the second week in July and are residing temporarily in the Rachel House. Rabbi White comes to Char lotte from his position at Temple Am David in Warwick, RI where he served for four years. He was raised in the Kansas City area and later attended Kansas University where he received a B.S. in Journalism in 1979. From then until 1981, he pursued his career in journalism in Kansas City. From 1981-1986 he attended The Jewish Theo logical Seminary of America, receiving his M.A. in Rabbinics and his- Rabbinical Ordination. He served as Assistant Rabbi of The Seminary Synagogue prior to assuming his position in Warwick. Rabbi White is already hard at work acquainting himself with the activities at the temple and the coming High Holidays. He is enthusiastically looking for ward to being a part of the new era in Temple Israel’s long Rabbi Whtte history. Among Rabbi White’s goals are a fostering of greater under standing between Jews and non- Jews, and social service projects to maintain Temple Israel’s high profile in the community. He plans to concentrate on enhanc ing education programs for youth and adults and, in general, help maintain and improve appreciation for and living with our Jewish heritage and tradi tions. through tenth) took one family and brought in any supplies they needed. In February, we organized a seminar with Seymour Rossel. We each called ten to fifteen people from the school and invited them to hear Mr. Rossel talk about his books and reli gion. Each student brought in something to contribute to the pot-luck supper. We also planned the teacher appreciation dinner. We served the teachers salad, lasagna and turtle cheesecake. Each teacher was presented a bottle of wine and a thank-you note. We even surprised Mrs. Brodsky with her own card. On June 6, Ms. Schultz, owner of Ben & Jerry’s in Char lotte, donated a Vemonster to the board. A Vermonster is 22 scoops of our favorite ice cream on top of rich brownies. On top of the ice cream there are ba nanas, strawberries, whipped creani, chocolate fudge syrup, chopped nuts, M & Ms, and sprinkles. Pure enjoyment!!! Thank you very much, Ms. Schultz.
