Benjamin, M.D. will discuss the matter of Jewish Genetic Diseases, on January 17, 2002 at Temple Israel at 8:00 PM. Dr. Benjamin is a native of Cleveland, OH. He graduated from Ohio State University (Columbus) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and received his Medic Doctorate at Wayne State University College of Medicine (Detroit, MI) followed by a year of Internal Medicine training at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center (Phoenix, AZ). Dr. Benjamin returned home for his Pathology and Laboratory Medicine training, completing a Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital. Following a two-year tour of duty with the United States Air Force at Maxwell Air Force Base Regional Hospital (Montgomery, AL), he joined the Medical Staff of the Cleveland Clinic of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Benjamin, his wife Lois, their daughter, Robyn, and son, Lee moved to Charlotte in 1978. Dr. Benjamin has been a member of the Medical Staff of Mercy Hospital since 1978, Chairman of the Department of Pathology, and Medical Director of Laboratories at Mercy Hospital since 1985, and current President-Elect of the Mercy Hospital Medical Staff. He is the author of thirty-six articles in peer-reviewed national medical journals and principal author of a textbook of Orthopaedic Pathology. His community participation has included various activities in behalf of Temple Israel, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Mercy Hospital Foundation, and the Quality Care and Comfort Committee of the Carolinas Healthcare System. Personal inter ests are varied and include virtual ly all outdoor activities, jazz, art deco, reading, (especially Grisham, Cook, Turow, and Trevanian), and gardening. Dr. Benjamin notes that the Dr. Sanford Benjamin invitation to discuss genetic ill nesses in the Jewish population presents a challenge in terms of both context an perspective. He is looking forward to sharing both facts and opinions on this subject with members of the Charlotte community. This lecture is free and open to the entire community. A dessert reception will follow. Using slides, recording and live performance, we will examine the many different facets of Jewish music. Starting with music in Bible, this course does not limit itself to sacred music, but exam ines the development of folk and klezmer music, Sephardic music, some Jewish composers of classi cal music and music of the Yiddish the theater.
