The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2002 - Page 6 Author of ‘‘Motherland,” Fern Schumer Chapman Brings Her Story to Charlotte Motherland: Beyond the Holocaust - A Mother- Daughter Journey to Reclaim the Past is the story of a mother and daughter and their fragile relationship and the physical and psychological journey they share that brings them closer together. This true story is based on a trip Fern and her mother took in 1990 to the hometown in Germany her mother fled in 1938 at the age of 12. After a half century of exile, when Fern’s mother Edith asks Fern to accompany her on the trip, she agrees for a number of reasons. First, she wants to be able to share her family’s history with her own children, and she also wants to be able to show how the events of World War II continue to reach shut for so long. Motherland has been optioned by Hallmark Entertainment for film rights. Please mark your calendar for Thursday, May 2, when the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte Women’s Division brings Fern Schumer Chapman to our commu nity. Expires 1/2/01 Looking to the Future and Preserving the Past at the Hebrew Cemetery The Charlotte Hebrew Cemetery was founded in 1867 when the entire population of Charlotte was only 4500 souls. Jewish people from all over North Carolina are buried in the ceme tery, which serves all of our sur rounding towns and cities The Jewish community has grown from ^ine families in 1850 to a population explosion of over 8000 today, and shows no sign of abat ing. Although the Board of Directors must look to the future, and is commmitted to the formida ble task of preparing the cemetery to meet the needs of the new mil lennium, it is also mindful of the history that exists there. Preservation of the gravesites and monuments dating from the 1870s is equally important and is given the attention and respect it deserves. Monuments have also been placed by the Charlotte Sons of the Confederacy in an impres sive military ceremony to honor those Jewish soldiers that fought in the Civil War. We once again encourage you to visit the cemetery not only to see the work in progress, but also to see, what has been accom plished. Visiting hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Many of you who are new to the Charlotte area, or who for other reasons are not familiar with the location of the cemetery, have requested the we publish a map. If you wish to have additional infor mation about the Charlotte Hebrew Cemetery, you may call the director, Hilbert Fuerstman at 704-366-7539. ❖
