Following the Civil War in 1867, the fact that only nine Jewish fam ilies resided in the city did not stop the Hebrew Benevolent The beautiful iron gates at the entrance to the Hebrew Cemetery. Society of Charlotte from pur chasing eleven acres of land off of Statesville Road which were con secrated as a holy burial ground for Charlotte’s Jews. The Society’s vision was to provide fellow Jews with a holy and digni fied final resting place. Today, those original eleven acres are part of our present larger Hebrew Cemetery. What happens when a Jew is laid to rest at Charlotte’s Hebrew Cemetery today? Having lived here for a while, many of us have experi enced the burial of family, friends and/or acquain tances at the cemetery. Yet, who amongst us has wondered about the sanctity of the cemetery? About who con trols that sanctity? Who controls the ritual? The holi ness? The dignity? A tour of the cemetery brings Charlotte’s past to full circle as one slowly walks through each neatly mani cured section, stopping to reflect at the 1000+ graves of loved ones, friends, acquaintances, and strangers whose lives shaped Charlotte into the great Jewish community that it is today. It costs approximately $10,000 per month to operate and maintain the cemetery. Federation dollars help keep the cemetery opera tional and also provide for the dig nified burials of indigent Jews. Life is but a fleeting moment. Take this moment to support your Hebrew Cemetery Association. By becoming a member, your annual $72 tax deductible dues helps to guarantee the holiness and sanctity of your own final resting place while at the same time, provid ing for the continued and improved mainte nance of cemetery grounds and further development of the cemetery memorial park.
