The Charlotte Jewish News -November 2005 - Page 14 Youth Visions Hebrew Highlights Hebrew High students prepared for the High Holidays in an all school program entitled “T zedakah, Teshuvah and Tefillah.” For their tzedakah proj ects, the students created “Comfort Pillow Cases” to send to the victims of hurricane Katrina and Rita. Each pillowcase was hand decorated with cheery designs and good wishes for brighter days in the future. In addition, some students sewed tiny fleece caps for preemies in the Emory Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta nursery. Nurse Rayna Bernstein accepted the gift and assured us that the “pwesome” little hats would be put to good use. Small group discussions cen tered on the concept of Teshuvah, or return. The groups read several quotations from our sacred texts and discussed their relevance to life in 21 St century America. They easily understood that this special time of reflection in the Jewish year is a great gift to all who take the task seriously. Finally, the students were chal lenged to write their own heartfelt tefillot (prayers). Below are sever al examples of their work. Samantha Berinsky and Lindsay London: Thanking God for helping us. Everything deserves a prayer. Forgiveness being asked for. Inside ourselves prayer always tells us who we are. Love in an answer to prayers. Live life knowing we prayed and God is watching over us. Always keep prayer no mat ter when or where. Home is always just as good a place to pray as syna gogue Alex Widis: Taking time Earning respect Forgiveness for our sins Israel Looking inside ourselves Learning who we are A peaceful quiet place Hope, happiness and honor J.
