The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2008 - Page 14 Community News Newcomers Here in this space for the last few months we have brought you several new families, couples, and singles that have arrived in Charlotte. The diversity of their experience is inspiring! From New York, to Florida, to Minnesota, newcomers arrive in Charlotte from many places. Like the Promised Land itself, Charlotte brings the hope of a new life and prosperity. And it’s wonderful to know that part of that new life can be as a member of a vibrant and growing Jewish community. Shellie and Harvey Barer made them selves indispensable in the Jewish com munity when Shellie took a position as assistant to the Executive Director of the Levine JCC. Andrew and Christine Raphael involved themselves in a different kind of community with the local equestri ans. In spite of her rigorous work hours as a schoolteacher, Amy Ringgold sings with the Temple Israel choir. And Lina and Michael Newman’s memberships in Hadassah and Temple Israel have already brought them rich and rewarding friend ships. These newcomers also found connec tions through The Charlotte Jewish News. Whether it was a program they attended or a service or product they needed, they located it in these pages. And readers of The Charlotte Jewish News were able to reach out to these newcomers when they saw their stories here. If you are a newcomer, your story belongs here. And the newcomers we seek to befriend will be found here in future issues. Amy Ringgold Michael and Lina Newman Mitzvah Project to Benefit Camp SOAR and Camp Shalom My name is Melanie Zimmermann and I am working on a special project for my Bat Mitzvah. My father and 1 are organizing a charity soccer tourna ment, with the help of a profes sional company that will be hosted at the Levine JCC, on the weekend of July 26-27. The proceeds will go to Camp SOAR and Camp Shalom, two camps that help Special Needs children and adults. We are hoping that we can enlist the aid of business sponsors who will help provide funding for t-shirts, trophies, promotion of the tournament, and other necessary costs to run the tournament (about $5,000). In addition to the obvious advertising benefits such a spon sorship will provide, a sponsor will be able to take pride in help ing these camps and all the chil dren and adults who attend them. When the tournament is over, Melanie Zimmerman the money earned from partici pants will be used specifically to help supply equipment to the camps and provide scholarships to those in need. I am very excited to be able to make a positive impact on special needs children and adults. If your business is interested in being a sponsor, please email me at 3v3touma- ment@gmail.com. O To our Community: The Cathcarts would like to thank our friends in the community for your cards, calls, food and words of consolation. Everyone has been so thoughtful and made this time a little easier. Terri, Jason, Vicki, Jordan and Phillip Ji
