The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2009 - Page 29 Community Mews Community Yom HaShoah ^|.g you an Israeli Living in Charlotte? Commemoration Lifted by Carolina Voices’ Festival Singers Monday, April 20 at 7:30 PM at Temple Beth El Each year the Jewish community of Charlotte unites in spirit with Jews across the world as we designate a day on our sacred calendar to ritually remember the tragedies that befell six million of our Jewish brothers and sisters and five million of our brothers and sisters of humanity during the Holocaust. This year’s Community Yom HaShoah Commemoration promises to be awe-inspiring helping us to remember not only with words, but with music offered by gifted voices and art created by loving hands of all ages in our communi ty Carolina Voices’ Festival Singers will present the Charlotte premiere of Donald McCullough’s Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps. Hailed by musicians and critics alike, this profoundly moving and compelling work is based on music and letters written by prisoners of the Nazi concen tration camps. These works were first discovered in the Aleksander Kulisiewicz Collection at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Working with these archival materials, composer Donald McCullough wrote the Cantata and interspersed it with narrative selections also written by the pris oners. Members of the Charlotte community will join the Festival Singers in presenting these read ings during the concert. Completing the performance will be Leonard Bernstein’s landmark Chichester Psalms, a beautiful and inspiring work that calls for spiri tual reconciliation and brother hood. Adorning the sanctuary will be ceramic butterflies, painted by countless hands in our community from our smallest children at the Charlotte Jewish Preschool to our seniors in Oasis to CMS students at Barringer Elementary. This effort is part of a national program called The Butterfly Project. This artistic, educational project began at the San Diego Jewish Academy and has the mission of providing a powerful visual representation to remember the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust and to honor the survivors. Charlotte’s goal in participating in this project is to create 2,000 butterflies ulti mately to be displayed on a wall at Shalom Park. Prior to the concert on April 20, memorial candles will be available for survivors and families of survivors to kindle in memory of their loved ones. This opportunity is made possi ble by the generosity of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte, Temple Israel, Temple Beth El, and the Carolina Voices’ Festival Singers. To pick up a ticket for this concert, please stop by Temple Israel, the Jewish Federation, or Temple Beth El and join us for this special concert of remembrance, faith and hope. The hope is that families will engage in social activities togeth er, and new friendships will be built. Please contact Hagar to get a survey form to fill out so that we can appro priately match you with a family with similar interests.
