Recently, the 3 s and 4s participat ed in two special mitzvah projects. The 4s took part in a food drive, collecting a tremendous number of cans and boxes of nonperish able food for Jewish Family Services (JFS). But, before the food was shipped off to stock JFS’s pantry, the cans doubled for decorations at the 4s graduation. “When I was figuring out the budget for graduation, I thought, ‘In these economic times, why am I buying a bunch of decorations that will just be thrown away that night?’” said graduation chair, Stacey Slomka. “I wondered if there was something else we could do that would give back to the school or community.” Inspired by the food baskets that decorate Congratulations to the JPS graduating class of2009! the bima at some Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Slomka came up with the idea for JPS’s graduation. On the 4s big night, balloon-topped pyramids of food made for unique and pride-provoking displays among the caps and gowns.
