The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2011 - Page 16 Hebrew Cemetery Association By Lorrie Klemons, publicity It is December, the Jewish month of Kislev. From the first candle lit on December 20 through December 28, Jews all over the world will rejoice in the holiday of Chanukah. The priee for the reli gious freedoms we enjoy has been eostly. Millions upon millions of our aneestral brethren died in the name of that freedom, in the name of God. There is a reason that Jews have survived for more than 3,300 years. We are humanity. We light the sparks for holiness and right eousness all over the world. Wherever there are Jews, there are mitzvot that make the world a holier plaee. Every time you light a eandle on Shabbat or other Jewish festival, every time you do a righteous deed, every time you give eharity, every time you pray, every time you put on tefillin, every time you do a random aet of kindness, every time you feed the stranger, you are spreading God’s holiness and you beeome a light unto the world. During this festive holiday where we eommemorate our sur vival and the miraele of the lights, you have a ehanee to beeome your own miraele of the “light.” You have a ehanee to light up the world here in Charlotte by beeoming a member of the Charlotte Hebrew Cemetery. With the death of a loved one eomes the deepest dark ness, but you ean light up that darkness for your fellow Jews here in Charlotte by guaranteeing their departed loved ones a eonseerated and holy final resting plaee. By doing so, you support the work of the Cemetery Assoeiation in its quest to dignify and honor those who preeeded the rest of us in eternal slumber within the womb of Mother Earth. And in doing so, you also guarantee for yourself and your family your own saered spaee when those end of life issues eome knoeking at your door.
