In preparation for this event, I perused Doron Kombluth’s web site and watehed his video of “Raising Kids To Love Being Jewish,” whieh led me to think about my parenting deeisions and my ehildhood. The faet is, that I kind of stumbled onto loving being Jewish, beeause as a young divoreed parent of 28 with a four year old, I had to make some hard deeisions about how to raise my son. It was not in the forefront of my mind if or how I would raise my ehild Jewishly. Yes, I enrolled my son in a Jewish presehool. Al though, until my divoree, I never gave it mueh thought. I was just Jewish. If you grew up like me, being Jewish was who we were and what we did and not neeessarily something to love. In summary, I went to publie sehools. My par ent’s “made” me and my two sis ters go to Hebrew sehool every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, synagogue on most Friday nights and Saturday mornings, and suffer through holiday dinners at long length. It didn’t oeeur to me to be in love. I do remember several re- eurring events as fun Judaism: being in the Temple sukkah and getting to eat eookies; daneing with an Israeli flag on Simehat Torah; going to the Purim eami- vals; and aetively partieipating in Jewish youth groups and eamps. So, it stmek me after my sepa ration that, if my ehild’s father would see my son, in another eity every other weekend, he would miss 50% of his “mandatory” He brew sehool. This thought fright ened me, beeause I felt that we needed family and a eommunity to support us at a very unsettling time in our lives. It was Debbie Bloek who ran the The Charlotte Jewish Pre sehool where my son was en rolled, who led me to investigate The Jewish Day Sehool as a solu tion to my Hebrew sehool eonun- drum. I visited the then dumpy old house on the hill with its dis jointed trailers, now the Shalom Park Parking deek. I thought, “Okay, so it’s an ugly sehool, but seems like a good edueation. Great. My son will be part of a CJDS Charlotte Jewish Day School The Pearlman Family small Jewish extended family and I won’t have to foree him to go to hebrew sehool twiee a week.” I had no idea what influenee this one deeision would have on my son’s life, mine, or my hus band Guy’s life, or the lives of our two young ehildren now enrolled at the day sehool. The most amazing things began to happen with my oldest at CJDS. He loved it. He was a sponge for seeular and Judaie studies. He would eome home and retell what he learned and want to take part in the Jewish eommunity and eustoms. Amazingly, I myself got a seeond round of Jewish ed- (Continued on page 13) C JP’s Circle of Life By Ron and Janice Weiner The Charlotte Jewish Presehool (CJP) has been an integral part of our lives sinee we moved to Char lotte in 1989. We were fortunate benefaetors of those who eame be fore us - who established the sehool and made it a shining bea- eon within the Charlotte Jewish you deserve feel beautiful 704-542-8686 Ditesheim COSMETIC SURGERY youdeservebeauty.com eommunity. We arrived in Char lotte as our three ehildren were just 1,3, and 5 years old. Our two youngest, Rebeeea and Jordana, were attendees at CJP right from the start. Both reeeived a wonder ful introduetion to Judaism in a warm and loving environment. CJP has been the foundation of our ehildren’s Jewish edueation and an entree into the Charlotte Jewish eommunity for our entire family. It was there that lifelong friendships began and where our ehildren learned the basies of Jew ish values and eelebrations while having a lot of fun. It also beeame a springboard for our adult in volvement in the eommunity as I served as both the Treasurer and later eo-ehair of the Charlotte Jew ish Presehool Board of Direetors. In 1989, CJP had a strong repu tation in the Charlotte eommunity for its safe, loving, and eduea- tional environment. This reputa tion eontinues today with speeial thanks to its dedieated leaders and staff. Fast forward to 2009 ... our daughter, Rebeeea, returned to Charlotte from Grinnell, lA after reeeiving her baehelor’s degree from Grinnell College and her Charlotte Jewish Preschool teaehing eertifieate. She found a seeond home at CJP starting as a substitute teaeher in the Spring se mester and then beeoming the Ju- daiea speeialist. Her love of Judaism and of all the ehildren spills over to her full life and is a strong part of her identity. How wonderful it is to be out in Charlotte with Rebeeea and wateh her with her students. They are full of love and hugs for her and for them from her as well. She has a strong eommitment to teaehing Jewish fundamentals in a fun, lov ing and earing way to our future generations. In addition to her CJP role, Beeea teaehes fifth grade He brew for both Temple Israel and Temple Beth El. Her sister, Jor dana, also had a love of Judaism planted in her at CJP and now teaehes the mini minyan elass at Temple Israel on Saturday morn ings.
