The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July 2015 - Page 2 Letter to the Editor Forgotten Holocaust Memorial On an empty stretch in Mar shall Park on McDowell Street between 2nd and 3rd streets stands a modest little memorial stone, almost completely covered by a scraggly bush. It once stood honorably between Temple Israel and a large church on Morehead Street, donated by the Jewish community in memory of the Holocaust. Television reports have tried to raise awareness of the Jewish community to this neglect, to no avail. A suggestion to move this little memorial to the vast area of Shalom Park has been rejected. I have come to understand that our community’s leadership sees value in leaving the memorial in the public sphere. But as it stands neglected, no one can appreciate it. The Butterfly Memorial com memorates the children. Do the adult Jewish victims of the Holo caust not deserve a memorial that is visible to the Jewish commu nity and its many visitors at Shalom Park? Several students from Charlotte’s Con solidated Hebrew High School including Jason Der- mack, Cara Dillhyon, Rachel Musa, Dana Sheinhaus, Lanie Hitt, and Lindsay Rosenzweig par ticipated in the Art of Zikaron project under the lead ership of our Israeli Shlicha, Adi Rodvasky. Each student was paired with a family of a fallen soldier in Hadera, the Jewish Federation’s partner city, and learned about the soldier and his life and spoke about him during the ceremony. In addition to Hebrew High, students from the Charlotte Jewish Day School Choir, Temple Israel, Temple Beth El, Susan Gundersheim, Nancy Good, and the Levine JCC Choir, as well as Rabbi Biny- omin Weiss, Rabbi Noam Rancher, and Rabbi Jonathan Freirich all led a beautiful and meaningful service. On Sunday evening, April 26 the community joined together to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day. The audience enjoyed delicious falafel and the music of Mika Kami and the Kol Dodi Ensemble. People of all ages were clapping their hands and stomping their feet to the Israeli folk melodies. ^ Above, from the Yom HaZikaron Commemoration From the Yom Ha ’Atzmaut Celebration CONTENTS Federation News pp. 1-3 Women’s News p. 4 Levine-Skint Jndaic Library p. 5 Synagognes/Congregations pp. 6-8 Jewish Family Services pp. 9,10 Commnnity News pp. 10,14-18 Jewish Commnnity Center pp. 12,13 Schools pp. 19-21 Yonth Visions pp. 21, 22 Dining Ont p. 23 I would like to make a contribution to demonstrate my support of The Charlotte Jewish News.
