THE POWER OF COMMUNITY. PLE. . This year’s Shalom Park Free dom Sehool was the best yet. The six-week literaey and eharaeter building eamp had the most sehol- ars in its history, with 85 elemen- tary-sehool kids making speeial memories of summer fun. The seholars started off eaeh day with “Harambee,” an uplift ing pep rally featuring a guest reader from the eommunity or Shalom Park. They enjoyed swimming and drama lessons sev eral times a week, along with reg ular visits to the Levine-Sklut Judiae Library where they eould ehoose a book to take home and keep eaeh week of eamp. After noon aetivities ineluded roeketry, sketeh noting, Brazilian Zumba, working in the Shalom Park Com munity Garden, musie, Mimemat- ies, eomputers, seienee, puppetry, making linoeuts, granola, and rain stieks, soeeer, and ehess. Assuring JEWISH TOMORROWS Center and Aladdin Jr. at CPCC, Monkey Joe’s, Ray’s Splash Planet, bowling at Roll Ten Lanes, Kate’s Skating Rink, Wing Haven, the Nature Museum, Dis- eovery Plaee, Morrison Library, and Sky High Trampoline Center. They showed their eompetitive spirit at Providenee Day, where they spent the day eompeting in outdoor games for Freedom Sehool Partners’ Field Day. Fostering a love of reading was a eonstant theme for SPFS sehol ars this summer. In addition to Harambee, weekly times at the Levine-Sklut Judiae Library, a field trip to Morrison Library and a Seholastie book fair, seholars were treated to a visit from Hugo of the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets brought their Book Bus and Hugo’s House of Reading to Shalom Park in mid-July, where Hugo performed an entertaining and interaetive program and the ehildren were able to seleet a book of their own.
