The Charlotte Jewish News - August 2016 - Page 17 Jewish Family Services Annual Family to Family Campaign Kicks Off as We Celebrate ^ Our First 36 Years It was 1980, and the Jewish population of Charlotte was ex ploding as the eity emerged as a banking and eorporate eenter of the sunbelt South. Soviet Jews had been immigrating to Charlotte sinee 1974 and there were 3,300 Jews living in Charlotte. Shalom Park, as we know it today, did not yet exist. The number of Jewish Rus sians immigrating to Charlotte was inereasing and they needed assistanee. Members of the Jewish eommunity and the staff and board of the Jewish Federation saw that need and Jewish Family Serviees of Greater Charlotte was formed. For the past 36 years, people have turned to Jewish Family Serviees for help. First for help re settling in a foreign eountry, and then for additional soeial serviees sueh as voeational and finaneial assistanee. During our first deeade, JFS reeognized the need for a eounseling eenter and hired our first part-time therapist with the goal of providing low eost therapy to those in need. In 1977, the eounseling program grew and we started aeeepting insuranee, Medieare and Medieaid. Today, Jewish Family Serviees provides mental health eounsel ing, finaneial assistanee, outreaeh to seniors and their family mem bers, support, edueation and re- sourees. We treat eaeh person as an individual. We look at their en tire situation to determine what re- sourees they need, and together we help them find solutions that provide long-term stability. We eouldn’t aeeomplish this without the generous support of our eommunity. You provide the resourees to give families in our eommunity hope. When you make a donation to the annual Family to Family eampaign, you restore hope, dignity, and meaning when life’s struggles appear insur mountable. Your tax-deduetible gift to the annual Family to Family eam paign makes a loeal, personal, and enduring impaet by improving the lives of people faeing finaneial in stability, emotional, and mental health issues and the numerous other ehallenges that eaeh of us eneounters throughout our lives.
