PAGE SIX THE PIEDMONITOR JUNE, 1962 WEdmNT PRESS NOTES TCA Inlerliner gpa. 0 a 0 g aSHB iii ^ OA/LY ^‘-'CHTS •R |:^ & yuesoA ^/Dily "I’ll sure be glad when we find this guy's suitcase!” CHARLOTTE — Famed mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary was a recent visitor to CLT where he filled a date on his lecture tour. He was met by Station Manager Johnnie Newell who ar ranged a press conference and acted as Sir Edmund’s host. Newell also recently attended a weekend outing in Key West sponsored by the Airlines Progress Committee. Accompanying him were Boyd Rutledge and DSM Don Edmondson, Chairman of the Com mittee. Agent Tommy Young is transferring to ATL, writes Madge Lianiei-, and goes with the best wishes of the CLT crew. SHENANDOAH — Reporter Bill Pearman is transferring to DAN and bids a fond farewell to SHD. His replacement is Stanley Norris, formerly with the “old” Capital Airlines. The airport is being considered for improvements, including a 1,000 foot exten sion to the present 4,000 foot runway, and extension to the ramp and an additional taxi strip. WASHINGTON — DCA has some new additions to report this month, says Shannon Stevens. Joanne and Chuck Marginot have a new baby girl. In Reservations, new Agents there are Theresa l/apalka and Carl Carlson. Pat Hale is leaving the earth- bound ranks to become one of the Stewardii. Peggy Souser at the CTO won tickets to Hawaii at a B.O.A.C. party. She and Ann Parsons are taking the trip the first of August. In Operations, Tom Clegon has been promoted from Lead Agent to Chief Agent, and “chief painter” Howard Crites is responsible for a new paint job on all DCA vehicles. HUNTINGTON — Edward Casey and his wife received quite a Mother’s Day present — a seven pound, seven ounce baby boy. Ed, says Irene Blake, is “proud as a peacock.” He and Gary CaUicoat have been transferred to CAE where they will help open Piedmont service. ASHEVILLE — A big surprise party gave the Dave Smith family a sendoff to Augusta where they will be after June 1. Noting a new Agent, Naomi McGuinn writes, “We’d like to wel come Joyce London to the Piedmont family. Our Manager Jack Gwennap says no more girls — four on his knees at one time is pretty heavy!” Dave Cameron and Naomi were the most recent vacationers — Dave to various Piedmont stations and Naomi to New York. May 14 marked a big day at AVL — Julius Dean com pleted seven years with the company, and the DC-3 flights were terminated. WILMINGTON — All would-be fishermen will be interested in the ILM news this month. It seems the blues and mullet have really been running, and the big ones have been hitting “out side.” Charlie Leonai-d says that “Pappy” Wilkes advises that he should have his boat ready for fall fishing. TRI-CITIES — Ray Norris made the sacrifice supreme and gave up part of his vacation time to write the following report: “Off to a good vacation start were Helen Hopson and Carolyn Pearson. They took a long leap over the states and landed in Europe. Charlie Morrison got some of old Sol’s heat rays, but from working at home, not at the seashore. Visitor Don Shanks almost didn’t board one of our flights out of here. His pass read “Mrs. Shanks” and the Attendant balked when seeing it. Better luck next time, Don. The temperature here is 91 degrees. Come on over and Don Woods will get the cokes — one catch — you have to pay for them yourself. Memo to YFR Turhy: Watch out for them low-flying cars when it’s IFR.” KNOXVILLE — Piedmont should be in new quarters at TYS by presstime, reports Carl Simpson. They’ll have a new crew lounge, air-conditioning, and many other improvements. Diane White has left the staff to await an addition to her family. Va cationers include Barbara Ironside and husband who went to Mexico, Sam Vance to Honolulu, and Ted Arnold to Bluefield. Captains Lee Cottrell and Roy Bro^v^l, and First Officers Hubert Altizer, Joe Helsabeck, Jim Schriver, and Glenn Harr are taking pilot training at INT. COLUMBUS — New reporter Bert Carlos welcomes new Agent Steve Turner. Joanne Short just spent eight days touring Hawaii at the expense of United Airlines, and Shirley Sword and her mother just returned from Los Angeles where they attended a reception given by the Shah and Empress Farah of Iran, complete with movie stai's. Bill Cash is taking his holidays at home. The crew has hung up the bowling shoes for another season and is ready now to take a whack at softball. RICHMOND — “Congratulations go to Bill O’Bryan on his promotion from Chief Agent to CAE Station Manager,” writes Marie Prillaman, “and to Bob Query on his promotion from Lead Agent to Chief Agent. Bob Bullock is taking flying lessons and we understand he expects to orbit soon.” Bob Query and John Weidensaul are still in the dog business with Bob selling Spaniels and John Poodles. For Bob the dog business will have to be side tracked for a while as he’s expecting a blessed event in Septem ber. PARKERSBURG-MARIETTA — Virg Flinn gives best wishes to all the new promotions and says, “We extend a welcome aboard to Vize Dotson. Though we don’t give lemonade when the tempera ture exceeds 90 degrees in the summer, or have as much snow as they do in BLF, we do have a nice airport and a nice community in which to work. We hope Vize enjoys his tour of duty in the beautiful Ohio Valley. Baltimore’s gain is PKB’s loss with Don Shanks going over to ramrod the operation. He was a swell boss and will be missed by all.” CHARLESTON — The CRW animal shelter is well stocked these days with Jim McCormick raising rabbits and Beagle pups, and John Comer’s cat having kittens. Reporter Ruth Shumate wishes Comer well on his promotion from Lead Agent to Chief Agent, ATL. The annual Bell Lines charter to the IND Memorial Day Races was scheduled there again as well as one for the local Elks Club and their wives. BECKLEY — And this word from Bob Wilson; “News from BKW all normal, with spring showing up now in the trees. We’re hoping for a VFR summer. Agent Jack Guy lyas in the hospital for a few days for observation and his trouble was diagnosed as an ulcer, so the next time you come up or are on a flight through and see an Agent foaming from the mouth, don’t get upset — it’s just Guy and his MALOX treatment. Bob Harper is also a MALOX user. Charles Field and I have a great deal to look for ward to. The offices are now in the process of being painted and spruced up for the coming summer months.” WINSTON-SALEM — The general picture at INT these days is one of mass, harried, and quietly-hysterical confusion. A vague pattern is beginning to emerge from all this scrambling which will take on more form as the time draws near for route inaugu rals. They’re still bowling in the lunch time league, and have finished one set and started on another. Trophy winners for the last session include Betty Fulp for high average, Delois Strickland and Eddie Culler for first place, with Delois also taking honors for high game. Dixie Holt, in another league, won awards for being “the most improved player” and for high set. In the same league Hal Moser was cited for high handicap game. Current standings show C. W. Gough and Katherine Cox in first place with 2,741, and Freddie Sfreddo and Ann Gregory in second place with 2,732. 30ST OW TUt CP\«T CUKRLIE AROUND THE SYSTEM . . .
