Bulldogs
Favored To
Win Title
Atlantic Christian College be
came the clear-cut favorite to
win the Carolinas Conference
tennis championship Saturday
by taking an 8-1 win over
Guilford College, the defending
champion.
The Bulldogs won five singles
matches and then swept the
doubles for their most impres
sive win of the season. Atlantic
Christian and Guilford were
expected to contend for the title
this spring, and the Bulldogs
will still have a fight on their
hands, but Saturday's match
certainly pushed AC to the
favorite's spot.
Thomas Linne led the way
with a 6-4 win over Markku
Salokannei at one. Johan Sturen
followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over
Howard Goodstat at two.
Scott Nichols had Guilford's
only win, a 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory
over Krister Eriksson at three.
Greg DeFreitas defeated Lee
Smith at four, Fredrik Tem-
strand topped Gavin Behrens at
five, and Lennie Burns broke
into the AC lineup with a 7-6,
6-0 win over William Yancey.

The ACC Men came away
even as they split a doublehead
er with Wingate College. The
Bulldogs were shut out 3-0 in
the opening game and resurrec
ted for a close 4-3 victory in the
night cap. ACC coach Doc
Sandford was relieved to escape
with the victory. “I felt we
played with much more inten
sity and momentum during the
second game,” Sandford re
plied.
The Bulldogs were sparked by
the near flawless performances
of Doug Godwin and Jim Ma
her. ACC now stands 7-5 over
all, 1-1 in the conference and 3-1
in the district.

A Focus on:
Academics and the Athlete
“...And furthermore 1 would like to acknowledge...” These words
are the words of an athlete in the midst of an interview. ‘‘Uhn, I don’t
know...” These are also the immortal words of an athlete during aa
interview. Is there any difference in the grammatical structure?
Obviously. These are merely examples of the noted contrast between
the super athlete and the athlete.
Academics and the athlete must be on the same level. Just as one
hand washes the other, academics washes a clean dimension into the
lives of the athlete.
“Say man, I’m gonna make a million bucks playing ball, I don't
need the books.. .hey.. .I've got it all.' ’ Spoken words from the voice of
experience, right? Wrong. Spoken words from the voice of insanity.
Money, despite myths of ancient times, cannot purchase common
sense. Athletes must sometimes make spur-of-the-moment decisions.
These decision are the prime difference between triumph and failure,
winning and losing.
Academics and the athlete are encountering a better relationship.
Once at a dismal standstill, today's athletes have opened doors to
education. This open-door policy is the major ingredient in molding
an athlete into a super athlete.
What’s an autograph, if you never learned to write? What’s a Rolls
Royce, if you could never accomplish the written test? A dream. It's a
dream an innocent kid dribbling a ball in the park constantly has. In
the wondering eyes of a child, athletes wear a flawless cape with a
bold “S” embroidered on the front of their wrinkle-free attire. Yes,
they're Superhuman. Athletes of today must inspire the children to
take their ABC’s seriously...the future is their pearl.
