ACROSS THE TRACKS By Betty Brown October with its brilliant array of color affords many pleasant hours for hikers and hunters. Martha Sellers is travelling all around the country tak ing pictures of the beautiful scenery. The Jim Brennans, Dorothy Burns and daugh ter, Nancy, reported a nice time when they re cently attended the Cherokee Indian Fair. We still have a few vacationers this month. Bud Taylor and family spent a most enjoyable vacation at Pawley’s Island, South Carolina, while the Ed Hills vacationed at Carolina Beach. John Goldberger spent his vacation visiting various places of interest throughout the South. Among some of the towns he stopped were Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Athens, Georgia. Roy Brown took a trip to Miami Beach. I was told that all the fish he caught could be put in his fish bowl. We were sorry to lose Sue McLaughlin who has again taken up full-time household duties. In trying to find news for the Echo this month, I am like the little girl who after several hours of fishing suddenly threw down her pole and cried, "I quit!” "What’s the matter?” her father asked. "Nothing,” said the child, "except I can’t seem to get waited on.” The best way to learn is by experience—other people’s if you’re smart. Pete Dockens took his va cation the week of the World Series. Pete sure was sick, as the Phillies lost. We have several new men working in our department. Jones, Charlie Tinsley, Eston Lively, Quinn, Ernest Smith and Thomas Dovies. Reports are Goode Loftis went to his ranch re cently late one afternoon. He started home that night, he didn’t have any lights, and that place of his is so far back, it’s out of range for the moon and stars. It was so dark, Goode slept in the car and came out the next morning with day break. Goode, take that lantern next trip. Well Grady Wilkie "finally” got moved, he is taking his vacation this week getting everything in its place. Several fellows from our department gathered daily at Grady Oliver’s during the World Series to see the games on television. Edith Wright and Nellie Justus have been on vacation. Edith took hers in Brevard, while Nell was hitting the night clubs in Washington. Democracy means not, ‘I’m as good as you are”, but "you’re as good as I am.”—Theodore Parker. It is not only necessary to have faith in a good cause, we must also make investments in it. FIVE YEAR CLUB The following employees recently became eligible for the Five Year Club.
