ing financially. He almost has to be. He has a new telephone in his house and also a new T.V. set. Real classy don’t you think? The Power Dept, may amount to something yet. Nice going Clarence. We, who enter by way of the Cellophane park ing lot are proud of the new flood lights. It is much safer now in that one can find his own car. We believe this to be the best parking area we have ever seen. The lights are very well arranged too. The Power Dept, is proud of our new Turbine. So far it has proven very efficient. Since it is the back pressure type, it affords an opportunity to carry much larger loads in that the same steam that drives the turbine passes on to the mill for heating and cooking process before it is returned to the Boiler Room in the form of hot condensate. The new boiler room is well under construction. We hope by mid-summer to have a new boiler. We will then have a real power plant. This will give us seven boilers and four turbines. We then hope to be able to better furnish all the power that each department may need. George Strickland says he can’t get use to the Transylvania weather. The weather is cold for a while then it warms up so quickly. George came to us from Virginia and lives in the Little River community. Coy Compton brought us some real nice cal endars from his store out on "Mill Hill”. We ap preciate this effort on Coy’s part. Thanks Coy— Everyone is planning that new vacation. It is interesting to know that all the fellows must be in the same boat with us. We all figure what we will be able to do and where we can afford to go. We will soon be getting reports on how each one came out. PAST-PERFECT: The Island of Crete had beautifully decorated bathrooms and indoor plumbing with a well-made system of drains and terra cotta pipes, more than 3000 years ago. These were connected with cisterns on the roof which caught and held the rainwater that was used in bathing. One Cretan bathroom had "an earthen ware bathtub with quaint designs of cows and calves”; another with "an exquisite fresco of fly ing fish, full of life, motion and exhuberant joy.” WAY BACK WHEN: Although basketball is regarded by most persons as a modern sport, the Ancient Mayans played a similar game called "tlaxtle” more than 1000 years ago, and it wasn’t even original with them! They probably learned the game from the Toltecs, a warlike tribe that had invaded Mexico from the north. The Boy Scouts of America have $32,650,000 invested in its camps for the boys of the nation. PLANNING By Dorris Reid and Eleanor Haring Another month has rolled around. And with little news, we again are found. But we have a few stories of interest And we will try to do our best. We have no new members to report But the old ones are still holding the fort. Henson cut his finger badly. And he hurried to medical very sadly. It was a bad cut without a doubt. The worst was when they took the stitches out. They did a good job as we all can see. He still has five fingers instead of three. The Legion dance was a huge success. As everyone here did confess. The music was good and the lights were low, And then there were a few who stole the show. Let’s all vote for another chance. To join in the fun at a Legion dance. We’re sorry, Gaynell, to hear the news, And know that you have got the blues. Charlie is going to the service soon, Hope he’ll be back before many a moon. We will try to keep you so cheerful When Charlie returns, you won’t be tearful. Lou Hoffman made a dinner date. Thought it was Charlie, but found out too late. It was an old flame from away down South, She sat and stared with open mouth, She reports today, her date was nice But today he’s gone, and no one threw rice. News is scarce, we’re sorry to say. But hope you enjoyed this anyway. We’ve worked and worked, groped and groped, Hoping to bring you the latest dope. You’ll hear from us another time. When we try to write another rhyme. ANCIENT AMERICANA: The first white child was born in America about 1000 A. D., or 500 years before Christopher Columbus discov ered it, if the claims made in an old Norse saga were based on fact. According to THE BOOK HOUSE FOR CHILDREN, the little girl’s name was Snorri Karlsefene, and she was the daughter of Gudrid and Thorfin Karlsefene, brother-in-law of Leif Ericson. 2^
