Under the rotation plan for members of the Nurses Scholarship Selection Committee, a new committee has been named. This committee, com posed of leading Transylvania citizens, will select two girls each year to receive the Ecusta Nurses scholarships. The new members are Dr. B. A. Stevens, Rev. J. J. Holmes, and Dr. Julius Sader. Mrs. Jessie Lollis has been named permanent sec retary of the committee. The scholarship program was undertaken by Ecusta in the belief that the Community as a whole would benefit, since more well-qualified and well-trained nurses will be available in this area. This program was started during the 1950- 51 school year, and since that time four girls have received the award. Sara Mull, Dorothy Jo Price and Miriam Willingham are in training at Me morial Mission Hospital in Asheville; and Helen McCrary is in training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. This year there will be six girls train ing under the Ecusta program. Any girl residing in, or having a substantial connection with, Transylvania County, who has successfully completed her high school education, is eligible for selection for one of the scholarship awards. Girls wishing to be considered for one of these scholarships should obtain application blanks from Mrs. Lollis. Help in filling out these blanks can be obtained from Mrs. Lollis, high school teachers or principals, or from their parents. All applications filed will be turned over to the committee, and the members will select the two girls for the scholarship awards. The committee in making the selection will consider the following factors as to all applicants: 1. General scholastic high school record. 2. Special interest in and aptitude for Nursing as indicated by scholastic record in subjects such as science, physiology, hygiene, etc. 3. Personality and character traits which evi dence seriousness of purpose, likelihood of completion of the three-year nursing course, and devotion to the ideals associated with the nursing profession. 4. General physical fitness for the demands imposed by the nursing profession. The committee will select as scholarship recip ients from among the applicants those girls who in their judgment possess the most desirable com bination of qualifications based on the above factors. The committee will have the power, if in its judgment circumstances warrant, to consider girls who have not made formal application. The committee will also make such inquiries and in vestigation as to the applicants as it sees fit. The committee in addition to selecting two scholar ship recipients each year will also select a first alternate and a second alternate. In the event that either or both of the persons selected for the scholarships shall be unable to accept such scholar ships, the scholarship awards shall then be offered in the order of precedence to the alternates select ed by the committee. 6
