He’s a philosopher. He’s Tom Morley. Tom came to UNC this semester to fill a tem porary vacancy in the philosophy department. He’s rapidly gaining a reputation as a breath of fresh air in the smoke filled room of the uncollege. I was going to interview Tom in his office, but I decided that such things as personality profiles were best conducted in one’s native environment. So we went to his house and did this over a bottle of whiskey. Tom has been in school since 1960, and has studied just about everything but phys-ed and fire prevention. In the late sixties he was an activist and was beat up by the cops. As a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Maryland, he fueled a student protest from his office. The dispute was over a decision not to give tenure to two of the most popular professors in the philosophy department. Thus he incurred the wrath of the administration and achieved fame as the leader of “the Skinner 87.” Tom has taught at the University of Maryland, and the University of Tennessee.
