9 his tobacco cut rough. As a theoretical anarchist, Tom doesn’t believe in marriage. “Marriage is real ly a contract between three people; yourself, your spouse and the state. I believe the state has the POWER to control certain aspects of your life but not thfi RIGHT” When I mentioned that a number of females had stated they really couldn’t understand him but would like to rip his clothes off, the subject turned to student teacher relations. Tom has never had an affair with any of his students, but he is not op posed to them in principle. As far as his students are concerned, he’d prefer to be king in the classroom, not in bed. As a philosophy major, I asked Tom to speak on the virtues of studying the noble science. Philosophy is a persistent effort to think things through. In few disciplines does one start out as a skeptic. There is a show me attitude rather than memorization of standard theories, in phiiosophy one can develop critical attitudes that are applicable to any field. In short, it helps to decompartmentalize the thought process. As far as the financial rewards of doing philosophy were concerned, the conclusion was that if you were interested in accumulating money and property, you had better try something else. As a philosopher, Tom’s property consists of a lit tle whiskey, some tobacco, a few books and a pic ture of his girlfriend, who happens to be a knockout (sorry girls). In relation to the students, Tom feels that they are more enthusiastic here than at the University of Tennessee, but the problem is that there just aren’t enough of them. I asked if he had any sage advice that he wanted to go out to the student body. His reply, “Get involved but don’t get your legs busted.” m m.
