6/THE BANNER/February 18, 1988 Kornegay leads ladies Late rally falls short; Women lose at buzzer By Geoff Cabe Sports Editor AUGUSTA, Ga. - Patrice Ross hit a layup with two seconds left to give Augusta’s women a 62-60 victory over foul plagued UNCA Monday night. The game was decided inside, where Augusta took advantage of foul trouble to UNCA front- liners Wendy Beecher, Carol Lowery and Aretha Barnes to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 40- 7 inside. “Beecher (who played a total of only 28 minutes) was in foul trouble and that hurt us," said UNCA Coach Mary Arm Myers. "But our post defense was not good. They worked it down low and scored." Kim Turner. Francean Lever- ette and Ross each finished with 14 points for Augusta, while Sheri Morgan added 12. Mechio Kornegay scored a game-high 20 points and Mary Mackey added 13 to pace UNCA (4-6, 10-11). Kornegay did the brunt of her damage during a furious five-minute stretch late in the game as UNCA turned a 56-46 deficit into a 60-60 tie. UNCA had a chance to take the lead when Turner fumbled the ball out of bounds with 47 seconds left. However, the Lady Bulldogs failed to get a shot off as their offense broke down and was whistled for a 30- second violation at the :17 mark. "It was the gutsiest comeback we’ve made all year," said Myers. "Obviously I’m disappointed that we didn’t at least get a shot off on our last possession, but it was difficult circumstances. I think we did everything right coaching-wise and I can’t always say that. Augusta just buckled down on us." UNCA lost despite shooting 26-of-52 (50 percent) compared to 24-of-51 (47 percent) for Augusta. August converted 14- of-22 free throws, UNCA seven-of-ten. The Lady Jaguars outreboimded UNCA 30-27. The game was tight through out and featured seven ties and five lead changes. The last UNCA lead came at the outset of the second half on a Carol Lowery three-point play which made it 33-32. However, Ross hit a layup on the next possession to give Augusta a 34-33 advantage. The Lady Jaguars would never trail again. Augusta expanded a 48-46 advantage to 56-46 with 6:34 left as Turner and Leverette scored two baskets apiece and UNCA turned the ball over on successive trips down the floor. Overall, UNCA turned the ball over 20 times, compared to Augusta’s 17. The Lady Jaguars outscored UNCA 8-3 late in the first half to take a 32-27 lead. However, UNCA came back with a Dar lene Hewitt three-point play to make the score 32-30 at inter mission. UNCA held several small leads in the first half, its last coming at 24-20 on a Beecher turnaround with 4:31 remaining. Sports Editor The UNCA Lady Bulldog fast- pitch softball team will show off some new found versatility when it swings into action next Thursday at home against Duke. Take, for example, All-Con ference returnee Fonda Frady, last season’s starting catcher, who will move to either short stop or second base this sea son. "Fonda has caught for us the last two years, mainly be cause we haven’t had a catcher," said Coach Suzanne Patterson. That isn’t a problem this time around as Patterson will have an impressive array of recruits, as well as a host of veterans with which to work. "We have a solid group of returning players," said Patter son. "This is also probably the best recruiting year I’ve had here." Three of the newcomers transferred from other colleges. Joy Flatley transferred from the University of Connecticut. She will see action at shortstop and second base. Dana Collins joins the team from Anderson (SC) Junior College and Leigh Pippin comes from Spartanburg Methodist College. Collins will catch, and Pippin will play third for the Lady Bulldogs. Last year’s team compiled an 18-12 record and finished in a tie for second in the Big South Conference regular season. However, injuries decimated the squad in the Big South Tour nament. "We only dressed out 10 players in the tournament," said Patterson. "Without the injuries, I think we could have fi^shed better." Last season’s Most Valuable Player, pitcher Angie Mulkin is back. Mulkin won 15 games last season. It was an injury to Mulkin that dimmed the Lady Bulldogs’ hopes in the tourna ment. Mulkin, who did the brunt of the pitching for the Lady Bull- last season, should more rest this season in the form of freshman Kim Wieters, who will also see action at first base. Last year’s leading hitter Lisa Davis (.457) is gone, but two of the Lady Bulldogs’ lead ing hitters return in Frady (.333) and All-Tournament t/NCA softball schedule DATE OPPONENT TIME Feb. 28 Duke (Scrimmage) 1:00 Mar. 4 Spartanburg Methodist (Scrimmage) 2:00 Mar. Frady finished last season tied for the team lead in home runs (5), while stealing 18 bases in 18 attempts. Myers hit .367 during the ’87 campaign while playing third base. She also ran the bases well, stealing 15 in 17 attempts. A shoulder injury suffered last season will force Myers to first base this time around. Another returnee is center- fielder Mary Wortas. Wortas hit .279 and had a .915 fielding percentage. She was also selected to the All-Tournament team. "The fact that we have ex perience up the middle makes me optimistic about the sea son," said Patterson. "We still only have 12 players on the roster, but that’s the most I’ve ever had here." Patterson feels the Big South Conference ladder will be a tough one to climb again this year. "Winthrop and Baptist play year round and will be tou^ to beat," said Patterson. "Winthrop is probably the strongest team in the Conference. We beat them once last year, and that was our biggest win." All of UNCA’s home games will be played at Montford Park and are scheduled to be double-headers. UNCA honors women athletes The UNCA Athletic Depart ment will honor all UNCA women athletes with a recep tion on Monday night before the Lady Bulldogs host Winthrop. The reception will start at 6:15 p.m. in the Bulldog room. The game begins at 7 p.m. Senior basketball players will be recognized before halftime; during the break, seniors from the other sports will be honored. "We are hoping to get a large turnout from students, faculty and staff," said UNCA Athletic Director Ed Farrell. The Winthrop game is the last home game of the season for the Lady Bulldogs. It is also the last game before the Big South Conference Tour nament begins. COAC An award-winning film about a new coach who demonstrates the love of a man who truly knows the power of God.
