THE BANNER/February 18, 1988/7 Williams scores 12 Winthrop defeats cold-shooting Bulldogs By Geo^ Cabe Sports Editor ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNCA roller coaster hit its lowest ebb Thursday ni^t as the Bulldogs fell to Winthrop 53-52 at Winthrop Coliseum. The loss knocked UNCA below the .500 mark for the first time in six seasons at 10-11 and pushed UNCA’s Big South record to a sub-par 3-5. The game was characterized by atrocious shooting, as both teams were under 40 percent from the field. UNCA hit 21-of-57 (37 percent), while Winthrop was 16-of-41 (39 percent). Winthrop hit 17-of-26 free throws, UNCA eight- of-14. Winthrop went 53-49 with only 17 seconds remaining when Clay Dade hit the front end of one-and-one situation. However, UNCA’s Brandt Williams closed the gap to 53-52 on a long three-pointer at the :11 mark. The Bulldogs got one last chance to tie when Winthrop’s Greg Washington missed the front end of a one-and-one with four seconds left. William Funderbxirk grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball upcourt to Williams, whose three-point attempt from the right side fell short at the buzzer. UNCA held a 44-42 lead before lohn Weiss hit consecutive three-pointers to put the Eagles 48-44 with 3:59 remaining, After a Ricky Chatman free throw cut it to 48-45, Dade answered with two free throws to eq>and the margin to 50-45. Keven Jones followed with a 17-footer to pull UNCA within 50-47 at the 2:13 mark. Kenny Smith hit two free throws with 1:34 left to make the score 52-47. However, Winthrop kept UNCA in the game by missing consecutive one-and-one opportunities. But the Bulldogs friled to capitalize as they missed their next five shots before a Chatman follow shot made the score 52-49 with 19 seconds left. UNCA held a 34-25 lead early in the second half but missed nine straight shots and turned the ball over five times during a seven minute stretch, as Winthrop tied the game 34-34 at the 9:31 mark. “We’re just like a racehorse down the stretch,* said UNCA Coach Jerry Green. Tou kick him and you beat him and it’s just not there." T thought we played very good basketball the first 25 minutes, and we were real gutsy the last five or six nainutes. But there was that stretch in between where we just didn’t respond," said Green. Weiss was the lone Winthrop player in double figures, finishing with 14. Williams paced UNCA with 12 points. Chatman and Maurice Caldwell had 11 and 10, respectively. UNCA held the lead throughout the first half and stretched its advantage to 27-20 at intermission when Williams canned a 17-footer at the buzzer. UNCA equalled that margin at 9-2 early in the first half, as Maurice Caldwell scored on successive trips down the floor. By BUI Vickeiy Asst. Sports Editor The UNCA Lady Bulldogs opened up with a hot hand, then held on in the second half to defeat Baptist College 85-76 in Charleston, S.C. on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs shot 61 percent in the first half and led at the break 47-28. "It’s the first time that we’ve played that well on the road this year," said Coach Mary Ann Myers. "We played well against a good team." However, the hot shooting ended in the second half, as UNCA shot only 26 percent. Baptist shot only 34 percent in the first half but hit at a 52 percent clip to pull within 10. "We were up by 21 at the break, and they cut it to 10," said Myers. "But we held on." Mary Mackey led the Lady Bulldogs with 25 points. Wendy Beecher added 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Mechio Komegay scored 17. "Mary Mackey played very well," said Myers. "She scored 25 points and didn’t turn the ball over much." Mackey had four turnovers in the contest. Anita Kidd paced Baptist with 21 points. Cathy Coker added 20, Yolanda Brown 14, and Holly Thompson 12. Coker also grabbed 10 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded Baptist 44-38. UNCA also made 11 steals during the game; Komegay and Mackey led with three each. On Wednesday the Lady Bulldogs travelled to Virginia for a game with Big South foe Radford. But it was the Lady Highlanders who rode a first half run and 26 UNCA turnovers to a 86-73 victory. "I thought that we played very hard and, at times, very weU," said Myers. "They just had too much for us." The Lady Bulldogs stayed close early in the game. But, with the score tied 10-10, Radford went on an 11-0 run and went ahead 21-10. Siisan Grindstaff scored' six points during the run. Radford maintained that lead and went into halftime with aa 41-31 advantage. In the second half, UNCA pulled within 57-50 at the 10 minute mark. But a three-point play by Stephanie Howard made the score 60-50 and ended the Lady Bulldog rally. Howard finished the game with 24 points. Patrinda Toney scored 16 and Grindstaff 10. ■We made too many unforced errors, and they beat us on the boards pretty badly," said Myers. "1 also thought that their depth killed us." Beecher led UNCA with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Komegay added 19 points and 9 boards. Can you overdose on laughing? THE BAD NEWS IS.
