nouember 16,2000 The Blue Banner Page? Sports UNCA beats GWU in final home match, 3-1 PHOTO BY ANTHONY GRECO Junior setter Jessica Beal helped lead UNCA to a victory over Gardner-Webb University. Ben Ezell staff Writer The UNCA volleyball team won their last regular-season match of the year on Nov. 14 at the Justice Center as they defeated Gardner- Webb University 3-1. The match also marked the last home game for Bulldog seniors Khristine Ambrose and Linwood Jaycocks. “Going into the tournament, we needed a strong win to help push us, and everyone played well,” said junior outside hitter Leslie Whitfield. The win by UNCA (13-20) was its second straight victory and an added boost going into the Big South Conference tournament on Friday, said Whitfield. “Everyone played confidently and together, and it was an all- around good game,” said Whitfield. The Bulldogs j umped out to the early lead and won the first game handily, but GWU came back to tie the score at one game apiece. UNCA seemed to lose some of its concentration in the second game and that was a major reason for the loss of that game. “I think it was unforced errors,” said Whitfield. “It was our fault because we made some silly mis takes. We were not communicat ing with each other, we were miss ing our serves at the wrong time and our passing kind of broke down in that game. We stepped it up in that third game, realized we were making those mistakes and tried to fix them.” The Bulldogs then closed out the match in the third and fourth games to record their 13th win of the season. Sophomore outside hitter Kristie Brinkley had 20 kills and 13 digs for the Bulldogs while junior outside hitter Heather Terrell contributed 15 kills ^nd 17 digs to help the UNCA cause. Whitfield added a career-high 12 kills and 18 digs. GWU was led by Theresa Harrison and Sara Alford with 12 kills each and Kellie Williams with 15 digs. UNCA finished the BSC regu lar season tied for fifth place with Elon College, but will play as the sixth seed in the tournament held at High Point University. The Bulldogs play third-seeded Winthrop University as play be gins Nov. 17. Winthrop defeated the Bulldogs in two close four-game matches earlier in the year. However, UNCA remains confident about its chances. “I think it is anybody’s tourna ment, and this is what we’ve been preparing for all season long,” said Whitfield. “Coach Torbett is excited that we drew Winthrop to play because we have lost to them twice, and we know them pretty well. We are a pretty even match-up for them.” UNCA will be without one of its starters for the tournament. Freshman outside hitter Kelly Budnik will not play because of a thumb injury sustained in the last contest against Winthrop. lanfllen^ccd Cliildren's llieatre ,-rarcl t elk theatre UNCA BOX Office 535-S291 momjiBm k5-i9 tbcKSDqy-satoKDqy 7:50pm sataiD(\y 4 0oprrj Bulldogs beat USA Vasda with last-minute basket Rngela Hantz staff Writer The UNCA men’s basketball team was able to pull out a 82-81 win over USA Vasda, a traveling exhibi tion team, in a game Nov. 12 at Justice Center. With 14 seconds left of play, sophomore forward Ben ^^cGonagil scored a layup to clinch the victory. “We found a way to win, and that is always good no matter if it is an exhibition game or not/’ said head coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We have plenty to work on, but we did some good things. I liked our intensity for the most part, and I liked the way we passed the ball.” UNCA was ahead for most of the game, and led 80-75 with 3:47 left to play. Vasda was given the opportunity to score six straight points to cap ture the lead, 81-80. Derrick Deloney tipped the ball in with 38 seconds left to edge the margin. Senior guard Brett Carey missed a three-pointer, but grabbed the re bound and made a pass to McGonagil, who was able to score and take the lead for UNCA, ac cording to the athletics Web site. “At times, our youth showed,” said Biedenbach. “We built nice leads in each half only to take some quick shots and let them get right back in the game.” Sophomore guards Andre Smith led the Bulldogs with 17 points, and Robby Joyner added 14 points and six rebounds. USA Vasda was led by Ajamu Gaines, who had 24 points, while PHOTO BY ANTHONY GRECO In the game against USA Vasda, UNCA edged out one point in the last moments of the game to win 82-81. Leo Murray contributed 17 points, according to the athletic Web site. “I think both of the exhibition games will help us as far as getting ready for the regular season this year,” said senior guard Nick McDevitt. “Vasda was more of an athletic team than Crossfire, and it was a good game for us that we needed to win,” said McDevitt. “We had some guys who played really well and stood out for us during this game.” UNCA will open the regular sea son on Nov. 18, at Justice Center when they take on Campbell Uni versity at 2 p.m. Around the Big South Conference r — WWW. 01 dsm obi I e. corri O I d s m o t) j I e Volleyball Tournament Gets Underway This Weekend The Big South Conference Radisson Hotel Volleyball Championship begins this Friday at High Point University.
