Many of the faces, however, are familiar to the basketjball fans of Western' North Caro lina, Rick McClure from Pis- gah High, «»ob Miller from Enka, Eddie Taylor from Western Carolina University, Walt Clonts from Hiawassee (Ga.) High and Jerry Webb from Tuscola High comprise a strong nucleus. “We recruit ed heavy in Western North Carolina this year, and came out with some fine ball play ers. They will all play an im portant part in the success of this year’s team,” commented coach Larry Burch. Brevard, however, will be faced with one major problem, a lack of experienced players. Ouit of the fifteen - member squad, only four return as let- termen, and only one was a regular starter on last year’s team. However, these returnees, Walt Clonts, Rod Rudisill, Hen ry Jones and co-captain Bill McClain worked hard over the summer months and have re turned much better ball play- erp. Two players, both High School All Americans, will add more experience. Eddie Taylor, a former Cnllowhee eager, transferred to Brevard 8 P.M. He has a stand out in pre-season work, and has provided a man to look to when the going got touch, expressed Burch. Big Dave Crowford, a 6’ 10” 225 performer from South Hill, Virginia, is beginning to come around after a year’s lay-off, “Dave has all the tools a big man needs. It is just going to take him to gain his confi dence and timing back,” Burch continued. Freshmen seem to be the key for this year, with eight struggling to make the starting unit. At the guard position, Rick McClure, Bob Miller, and George Hesiter are all looting good. Hester was the first fresh men in Brevard basketball his tory to be elected captain. He is an All-East performer from Morehead City, N. C. McClure and Miller are boith Blue-White All Star participants. Mike Coles, Steve Rubin, Frank Blount, Bill Miller, and Jerry Webb provide a sturdy group of forwards, “his group of freshmen forwards give me more strength under the boards. However, they have been ex tremely inconsistent but are gradually coming around. And too, they are small in compar ison to other college forwards, but all like to mix it up under the boards,” Burch said. “Generally speaking, we are a good deal stronger than last year. Our depth is good, with everyone pushing for the starting positions. We are big- ger than last year, and much quicker. This will allow as to open up and do more things, hopefully right. Other teams in our conference have im> proved and have more ex perienced players than we do, but I am enthused about the team and the players want badly to rebound back from last year’s poor show* ing.
