' paramount// PICTURES I PRESENTS ^ TECHNICOLOR* A PARAMOUNT PICTURE friends" Three Laurel and Hardy films to be shown in Dunham Sunday In a recent Sunday New York Times article, movie critic Vin cent Canby reflected on the rare comic gifts of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, whose wit and expertise in delivery of humor stemmed never from the contrived situation but always from honest human error and prediciament. Even more so than Chaplin or Keaton, these two strongly rooted their come dy in the events of the day and projected a quality that brought laughter to millions who iden tified with their confusion, em barrassment and zany but suc cessful solutions. And too, in a curious way, the individual behavior of Laurel and Hardy steps across the years and makes a statement about today’s gap between gen erations. There was in Oliver, the timid, tie - touching leader, a representative of adult soci ety complete with stubborn de termination to make things right by making them even worse. And in Stan, a king of flovrer child, forever breaking rules with a joyous spirit that revealed his knowledge of the fact that those rules weren’t really meant for him. In this series we have three of Laurel and Hardy’s most successful examples of human comedy. They were all made during World War II for one major purpose — to make sure there was no shortage of laugh ter. In “A - Haunting We Will Go” they are a jobless pair who are forced to work for The Great Dante, a master in Black magic. “The Dancing Masters” fea tures a comic ballet with Stan interpreting Pavlova and Hardy, Nijinsky.
