Page 4 THE CLARION Tim Black: The Man With The Golden Legs More Students Receiving Financial Aid Tim Black is not one to go halfway. “It’s the same with running and schoolwork; I go all out or not at all.” The skeptic would say he’s heard it before. It’s to talk about, but doing is another thing. Tim’s record here are Brevard, however, proves that he is true tohis ideals. With a 3.7 scholastic average, and All- American cross country status under his belt, Tim has proven himself to be one of the out standing members of the Brevard College microcosm. Tim xomes to us from Hunt sville, Alabama, where he was two times All-State in both track and cross country. Many larger four year schools recruited Tim, including University of Ten nessee, University of Alabama, and University of Florida. Tim chose Brevard as a “stepping stone to reach my highest potential” so as to be ready to face major competition in the N.C.A.A. In junior high school, Tim, set a national record (since broken) for thirteen-year-old milers with a time of 4:41. In later years he graduated to longer distance, where speed is not a necessity for success. One often wonders what motivates a runner to get up at 6:30 in the moming, put on the sweats, and run ten mUes in twenty degree weather. There is obviously not much glory even for the successful distance runner. Tim’s motivations are both aesthetic and practical. “Running toward my full potential always keeps me going,” also “I see running as a mediation, it takes my mind off of my porblems, and lets me think.” Tim Black is an athlete with goals to reach, and a potential to fulfill. Here’s hoping his potential leads him to Moscow in 1980. Mr. Robert G. McLendon, Dean of Admissions, is pleased to make the following an nouncements concerning scholarship programs at Brevard College. Effective Fall of 1978, for incoming freshmen two (2) full Allen H. Simms Scholarships covering tuition, general fees, room and board, and five (5) $1,000 Sims Scholarships will be awarded annually by Brevard College to exceptionally gifted students. Recipients are designed Sims Scholars in honor of Allen H. Sims of Gastonia, N. C., the Chairman Emeritus of the Brevard College Board of Film Course A Success Brevard College has in troduced into its curriculum for this spring semester a new course entitled “Film as Literature”. The course is taught by Miss Sara Barnhill and Mr. Roger Taylor and meets once a week for three hours. The purpose of this course, as Mr. Taylor states, “is to in troduce the student to the films not only as a form of en tertainment but also as a form of literature.” Before viewing each film the class is told a little bit about the film and what literary aspects it should look for while viewing the film. When the film is over, the class then discusses the technical and hterary values seen in the movie. The response to the course seems to be a good one. Mr. Taylor adds that, “more people applied for the course than they expected,” and he hopes that tte course will be continued next semester. The students certainly showed an interest in discussing the film. Who knows, Brevard College may soon have its own Rex Reed or Rona Barret.
