Injuries Challenge Harrier Champions
By John Corish
Can the Brevard Roadrunners
win their third consecutive cross
country title with the loss of
Alphonce Swai and the injuries to
Gordon Snaden and Allen Ford?
No other junior college team in
the nation has ever accomplished
this before.

Rinker New
Track Coach
David Rinker will take over as
the new Women’s Head Track
and Cross Country Coach.
Rinker, a graduate of James
Madison University, brings a
wealth of experience to the
women’s programs. During his 7
years at Blacksburg High School
in Blacksburg, VA, Rinker won
five District Cross Country
Championships and six Outdoor
and Indoor Track Champion
ships. In addition, his teams have
won five state titles, two in Cross
Country and three in the Outdoor
Track Championships.
Though the team will be young
and inexperienced, Rinker is
looking forward to the challenge
of producing a winning women’s
program. Patti Jones, the only

The Brevard College girls’
cross-country team opens the
season with ttieir first meet
September 30 at the Greenville
Roadrace in Greenville, S.C.
Coach Dave Rinker feels that
this “first full team” ever should
do well. The team has been at
strong this year with the addi
tions of seventeen freshmen, two
transfers from ex-rival
Clackamus Junior College in
Oregon, and a foreign student
from Denmark. No single in
dividual is leading the pack for
the Brevard team yet.
In the Apple Festival Road
Race, held August 25, Patrick
O’Grady from Ireland, Henning
Brandt from Denmark, and
Charlie Purser all took first place
honors with a very respectible
time of 50:07.6. Fellow team
mates Winston Brown and
Rodney Curry followed closely
with a time of 50:36 in a fourth
place tie.
Coach Norm Witek is not wor
ried about the loss of Alphonce
Swai. “The top five run
together,” he explained, adding
that this is an advantage the
team did not have last year.
The team will also temporarily
miss two top runners due to in
juries. Gordon Snaden, who
finished third in the nationals last
year, was hit by a car near the
end of the summer. In addition.
Allen Ford, who finished thirtjl
eighth, has a femur splint. f
