Howard Hanger to address Spring Convocation
Jazz pianist and ordained minister
Howard Hanger will be the speaker at Spr
ing Convocation Wednesday, Jan. 27,10:15
a.m. in Dunham Auditorium.
Hanger has served as a manager, per
former and composer of The Howard
Hanger Jazz Fantasy since 1973. He is the
director of special ministries at Central
United Methodist Church in Asheville.
Hanger received his BA degree at
Emory University in 1965. He attended
Candler School of Theology between
1961-69 and earned his BD. He studied
electronic music under Robert Moog in
1984 and studied piano in Florida at
Jacksonsonville Conservatory of Music.
The Jazz Fantasy has traveled overseas
playing in many nations all over the world.
According to a Southern Living article,
“Art is possibly the best way for people to
approach anything, spiritual,” said
Hanger. “We can rationalize until we’re
blue in the face, but we can never describe
a sunset or a baby’s smile that way.”
Troy Smith places third
by Elizabeth Stewart
Arnold Schwartzenegger he isn’t,Troy
Smith he is.
Troy took third place and a trophy
January 10 in the Ultimate Powerlifting
Competitionn held in Hendersonville.
Troy had one week to prepare and train
for this event. The physical preparation
and training wasn’t what Troy was wor
ried about, considering Troy follows a
rigorous workout every day. Troy concern
ed himself about his mental preparation.
He believes preparing mentally and hav
ing a positive attitude will take him far.
During competition,Troy tries to block out
all his anxiety and conscious fear. Troy
said, “When I go on stage I have but
terflies in my stomach, but I ignore it
because I know that what I am doing is all
business and concentration.”
If Troy isn’t in the gym “pumpin” on the
weights, he has another way to physically
working out. Troy, usually with friends,
goes up to the mountains and they cut
down old trees and big tree stumps.
Troy believes carrying these around on
hills and steep inclines will help build up
his tolerance.
Troy also helps out Hallelujah Health
Food Store, located on Main Street in
Brevard. Troy gives the buyer tips on what
most powerlifters and bodybuilders need
and use.
Troy will continue his training and strive
for his goals of reaching a new “max”. In
April, Troy will enter the North Carolina
Powerlifting Championship. Until then
Troy will continue to “push and pump up
the volume.”
