The Clarion November 10, 1992 Page 11 SPORTS Women’s basketball ready for a new, winning season by Will Parker Sports Editor The new women’s basketball coach Carmen Nelon had nothing but positive things to say about this years team. “Offense is our strong point. We will be using different combinations in the scrimmages against Warren Wilson College and Lees McCrae. We will use these two games to see where we are. Our defense needs a little work, but overall the team is coming together,” states Nelon. The team’s first regular season home game will be Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. against Denmark Tech College, which is a four year college. Baseball team ready for more action by Will Parker Sports Editor Although it’s just pre-season, the baseball team has done nothing but improve. So-saia"Coach Rusty Stroupe, ‘We’ve gotten a lot better and improved a lot. The team has really worked hard. The freshman have gotten a lot of valuable experience.” When asked about the upcoming season, Stroupe said the team has the potential to be one of the top teams in the conference, but that is completely up to the team. Stroupe also said, “I’m very proud of the team’s academic record, but it could be better. It’s hard to be an athlete and a student.” The first game of the season will be on Tuesday, Feb. 23. BC Outdoor Club shares experiences by Craig Tiller Clarion Staff Writer For those of you who enjoy the outdoors, especially outdoor recreation, the Outdoor club is for you. The club was founded with the idea that people who are outdoor activist should be able to come together and share ideas, travel experinces, and suggestions. The club is a focal point for people who want to find others interested in outdoor activities. Ellis Ryan, a member of the club, said, “The focus of the club is a socal setting for people who participate in outdoor adventure activities: mountian biking, rock climbing, kyaking, and other actives. Although members will help Chris Pool with Brevard College activities, we are not an instructional facility.” Ellis and other members of the club feel that if people use the outdoors, they should preserve its resources. The club will do service work in the Pisgah Forest to maintain trails and rivers by picking up trash. If you are interested and feel you can help, pay attention for signs posted around school for club meeting dates, times, and location. Men’s basketball strong defensively by Will Parker Sports Editor If you liked last years performance by the basketball team, you will love this years. The team has shown a lot of promise on defense in preseason. Coach Radford said “defensively, we are playing good ball. We are still a little off on offense though.” Radford continued by saying, “This year promises to be very exciting. We have a very mature team and six or seven of our players will be going onto four year schools..” Recently in preseason play, the team defeated Montreat Anderson by a score of 88-77. Radford is looking for more student enthusiasm this year. Last year against Spartanburg Methodist College, the crowd really helped the team by getting involved in the game. “Last year against Spartanburg Methodist, the crowd almost became a sixth man on the court and really turned the game in our favor. I hope the student body gets involved sooner,” concluded Radfed. The team’s first home game is on November 14 against Clinton College at 7:30 p.m. ComRAWLAnons to thb men's SOCCER ReqbonX Champions, The Brevard College Tornados!!!
