001 -'Srrf* n AT Ren Decatur Ren Decatur teaches with humor and experience by Mark Maguire Clarion Staff Writer At Brevard College, the phrase “Stereotypical Professor” is almost always a given oxymoron. However, in the case of Ren Decatur, it proves to be especially true. Ren Decatur teaches English and Literature here at Brevard, but by taking his class you learn more than the fundamentals of grammar or Shakespeare’s vast influence on 20th century literature. His lectures are filled with personal examples, allusions to philosophical thought, and always some humor. After graduating from high school, Decatur enlisted in the Coast Guard for four years before doing undergraduate work at UNC-Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College. It was during his sophomore year that he changed his major from Pre-Vet to English. A cousin who was teaching in New York State encouraged him to go into teaching, and when he finished his undergraduate work, he received a Bachelors Degree in English. After teaching high school for a few years, he returned to school, this time at the University of Idaho, where he earned a masters degree in English. Decatur came to Brevard College in 1982 to teach for a while before traveling through Europe in 1985-86. While in Europe he lived in Austria and Greece, and pursued unregistered undergraduate work at the University of Vienna. When asked about his experiences in Europe, he remarked, “I learned more in Austria and Greece than any other time in my life. I learned about the world, people, and myself.” Decatur returned to the United States in 1986 and taught that summer part-time at UNC-Asheville. The fall of 1986 took him to Western Carolina, where he taught for a year before returning to Brevard in 1988. In his free time Mr. Decatur enjoys going into the forest on foot, hunting, fishing, backpacking, climbing, swimming, and participating in triathalons. He is also working on three composition books presently, with two publishers interested. When asked for one word of advice for today’s generation, he commented, “Read. It*s the best tool a person can have. The most worthwhile effort a person can undertake.” Decatur also has two of his children here this year -,.Jiiill and Heather Decatur. Brevard College welcomes new resident directors by Sandy Kaighin Clarion Asst. Editor This year Brevard College has added four new members to its staff. They are: Aurwa Olivieri, Deranda McDade, Pablo Sanchez, and Drew Nelson. These individuals are the new resident directors. RD’s are understanding, caring, and are willing to listen to anyone, anytime. Aurora, the resident director in West Beam, is originally form New Jersey. Aurora likes Brevard College and the mountains but commented, “BC is a challenge.” Aurora graduated from Coastal Carolina University and received her Ma. Ed. at USC. Aurora would like “to assist students as they go through many changes in both personal and intellectual growth.” Deranda McDade is from Chattanooga, TN. Deranda is the resident director in Jones Hall. Deranda said, “I truly enjoy the people I have met, particularly on the staff. I am just getting to know some of the students individually and am looking forward to getting to know many more better.” Deranda is involved with SGA and Judicial board but comments, “I enjoy my counseling role here and hope to be someone people will feel free to come and talk with. I like to help students in their overall adjustment to college and in any way that I can in their personal growth.” The resident director in East Beam is Pablo Sanchez. Pablo has a degree in recreation with a minor in health. Usually, you can catch Pablo running along the highway, for he is a very active runner. Pablo “hopes to keep the intramural program running all year with good participation.” Originally from Zepherhills, Fla., Drew Nelson, resident director in Taylor finds the mountains a unique sight. Drew studied social studies at Tusculum College, where he received his B.A. “I like Brevard College and hope to see an increase in student activities and to see more participation and enthusiasm.” The 1992-93 student affairs staff is (back row, left to right) Asst.
