Wesley Fellowship meets on campus every Tuesday night by Stephanie Gardner Clarion Staff Writer The Brevard College Wesley Fellowship is an interdenominational group which encourages friendships and spiritual support among its members. Meetings are held on Tuesday evenings at 5 p.m. in the Project Inside-Out house. The group is lead by Rev. Ernie Mills, the college chaplain, and is open to everyone. The meetings are informal and include various activities each week. However, every meeting involves singing, devotionals, and food. Members are currently planning a retreat and other projects for this school year. On Oct. 13, 1992, the Wesley Fellowship attended a formal dinner with the Purgason Lecturer, Ron Vinson. The group has also been involved with volunteer services. They did maintenance work recently at a local camp during the day and enjoyed a bonfire and group singing later that night. The Clarion November 10. 1992 Pagg 9. Jon Negoescu stays busy at Brevard College by Debbie Duncan Clarion Staff Writer The student of the month this month is Jon Negoescu. Negoescu is a 19 year old sophmore from Marietta, Ga. Negoescu is a Spanish major with a minor in psychology. Above and beyond that, he is involved in several other activities. As a nominee for Who’s Who, member of PTK, Student Ambassador, and part of Big 10, he keeps himself occupied. His hobbies include swimming, singing, and reading. He finds time for them by being a lifegaurd at the Brevard College pool and participating in Chamber Chorale, a specialized singing group here at Brevard College. When asked where he was going next, he said that he had applied to about eight different colleges including Roanole, Queens, and Emory & Henry, but wasn’t really sure which one he wished to go to. Alumni inducted into BC Hall of Fame Each October, two alumni are inducted into the Brevard College Alumni Hall of Fame for their outstanding personal achievements and services which have brought honor and respect to Brevard College. This year, Brevard College is proud to announce that Caldwell W. Nixon of Lincolnton, N.C., and Stuart Black of Midland, N.C., were inducted into the Brevard College Alumni Hall of Fame during the College’s Homecoming on Oct. 10. Nixon is a 1930 graduate of Rutherford College, formerly located in Rutherford College, N.C., which was one of three parent institutions that merged in 1934 to form Brevard College. On Oct. 15, Nixon was also elected to the Brevard College Board of Trustees. He will represent Rutherford College on the 51-member board. He is a member of the Brevard College Board of Visitors; spearheaded the effort to raise $75,000 to establish the Rutherford College Conference Room in Coltrane Commons on the Brevard College campus; and chairs the Allen Sims Society, whose members have included Brevard College in their estate plans. Nixon, a retired business executive in banking and with the Veterans Administration, was bom in Lincoln County, N.C., and was educated at Rutherford College and Emory University. He is a veteran of World War II, and is married to Sallie White Nixon, with whom he had one son, now deceased. Nixon is a member of the East Lincoln County Facilities and Recreation Study Task Force, the Lincoln County Council on Aging, and chairs both the Health Committee of the Lincolnton Chamber of Commerce and the Educational Division of the Lincoln County Cultural Center Campaign. He also serves as president of the Lincoln County Walking and Sports Club, and has served on the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and Health. A native of Cabarrus County, N.C., Stuart J. Black graduated from Brevard College, where he was president of his class, with an A.A. degree in 1938. He went on to graduate from North Carolina State University with honors and a B.S. degree in agricultural education. He has served as president of the Brevard College Alumni Association and as a member of the Brevard College Long-Range Planning Committee. Black started his teaching career in 1940 as a vocational/agricultural teacher at Walielon High School in Zebulon, N.C. He entered WW II as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving aboard the U.S.S. Luka. Returning to Cabarrus County in 1946, he became assistant farm agent in charge of 4-H Club work for the N.C. Extension Service. Black originated 4-H Clubs in all of the Cabarrus County schools, and participated in farm extension projects with farmers. In 1949, Black opened a farm equipment sales outlet with a partner, WH. Williams, in Concord, N.C. He became interested in public school education in the 1950s and participated in the state drop-out study. He was elected to the Cabarrus County Board of Education and served for three six-year terms, serving as chairman of the board for 10 of those years. He also served as chairman of the Piedmont District of the North Carolina School Board Association. Black became heavily involved in community activities, participating in the formation of the Midland, N.C., Volunteer Fire Department and serving as its president. He is a member of the Midland Lions Club, and has been a lifelong member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, where he has been an administrative board member and a church trustee. In 1968 Black established a second farm equipment business, S.J. Black and Sons, Inc., in Monroe, N.C., which he continues to operate.
