The Clarion March 10. 1993 Page 5 BC Offers Low-Cost Weekend Trips by Stephanie Gardner Clarion Staff Writer Would you like to visit the beautiful Biltmore Estate, attend an action-packed rodeo, and help cook a meal for homeless people in this area? The Brevard College Weekend Trips and Programs project, directed by Aurora Olivieri, offers these events and more. The program was a collective idea suggested by Dean Norm Witek and Aurora Olivieri. “We thought there was a need and interest for it. Those students who stay here on the weekend often have difficulty going on a trip, or going out,” Olivieri said. The program provides transportation to and tours for interesting places and events in this area. An extra benefit of the tours is their low prices. “I realize that students do not have a lot of spending money, so I’m trying to keep the cost very low”, Olivieri explained. Two ways this is being done is by bringing picnic lunches from the cafeteria, and by choosing sights to visit with free admission. According to Olivieri, the program has been successful so far. One memorable tour included the Folk Art Center in Asheville and a visit to Camp Rockbrook to see the resident potter, John Dodson. Dodson gave a demonstration dTfalcu, a unique way of firing pottery originally performed in Japan. The Folk Art Center showcased the works of local artist and crafters. The entire program was free of charge. ' Some programs planned for the future are a road tour of local museums and trips to other colleges and universities. Olivieri also said that she Murray Lectures On BC Fine Print And Art Collection by James Woodley Clarion Asst. Editor Tim Murray, Director of the Visual Arts Department of Brevard College, will lecture on artwork that BC has been collecting for over 30 years at 2:30 p.m. on March 26 in the college library. The artwork, which can be found in the library, offices, and many buildings on campus, was created by students as well as international artists. The lecture will discuss how the collection has grown, what the various pieces are about, and will include an introduction to BC’s fine print collection. A folder has been published about the art on campus and is given out in the library upon request. could work with a hiking or river rafting group if one was organized. Anyone can suggest an idea for a future program. Spaces for the programs can fill up very quickly. “There’s a lot of interest in the programs”, Olivieri said. A bright pink sheet distributed to students earlier this semester listed programs and their registration deadlines. “If anyone lost their bright pink list of programs, they can come to me. I’ve got plenty more,” she added. Beware Of Hazards On Campus by Lorrin Wolf Clarion Asst. Editor Hazards around campus are a concern of students and the administration. Although Brevard College is a relatively safe campus, there are still dangerous areas. One hazardous area at Brevard is the parking lot beside Beam and Jones Dorms. “The spaces are too close together. It’s very easy to scrape against the car next to you when you’re pulling in or out of a space,” said freshman Amy Smith. Smith felt that the other campus parking lots had spaces of an adequate size. Another complaint from students deals with the driveway of Ross Hall. “The road up to Ross Hall is dangerous because it takes a' sharp curve with only enough room for one car,” sophomore Kym Kendall said. A major complaint of the students concerns loose bricks on the walkways around campus. “They look very nice, but the loose ones are dangerous because people can trip over them. The administration needs to fix them because, although students are used to them, prospective students and community members who visit the campus don’t know where the dangerous spots are,” Smith said. Aurora Olivieri, a Resident director, noticed loose bricks that were located on a wall in the back of Beam Dormitory last semester. “The only loose bricks that we had noticed and reported to maintenance were in front of Beam Dorm, and those were fixed over Christmas,” she said. PIO Service-Trip Goes To New Orleans by Susan Lee Clarion Staff Writer There will be a PIO service trip to New Orleans over Spring Break.
