Iil£. Clarion March 10. 1993 Page 6 Customized Dorm Rooms BC Students Create Personalized Living Spaces Out Of Standard Dorm Rooms by Susan Lee Clarion Staff Writer At their home away from home, students strive to personalize their dorm rooms using original ideas. Liesel Hubbard, Room 217 Jones, came up with the idea for her room through her friends. Hubbard has one wall that all of her friends have signed and another wall with colored pictures and sayings. Hubbard’s friends just come in and write what they want on the wall. “All illegal possessions are gone . . . along with my roommate, so will 1 get kicked out for graffiti on the walls? I thought you might want to know before you come search my room that they are washable crayons,” she said. Tracy Straub and Anne Gaines, room 264 Beam, came up with the idea for their room by putting out stuff that they have picked up and had nowhere else to put. They have been putting stuff up since the beginning of the semester. Their friends from here and back home have helped. 7 like everywhere I live to have a personality of its own.’ - Jesse Hull Jason Adams, Bodie Smith, Josh Markle, and Chris Rodrigues, in Apartment 7 of Ross, came up with the idea for their room because they needed more space. They put all of the beds into the back room to gain more space in the front of the apartment. About four or five friends helped them. Steven Roberts and Jesse Hull, Room 204 Beam, came up with the idea for their room because they did not like the institutional and drab look. “I like everywhere I live to have a personality of it’s own. I like the fact that everyone can get together,” Hull said. Justin Godard, Wesley Ahl, Steven David, and Brad Gray, Room 310 Beam, also personalized their dorm room. Gray builds home theaters, so he built a home theater in his room. There are two floors. On top there is a place to watch television and visit, and on the bottom is where they sleep. It took them about a week to build their room because they were in classes. It is like their own little world. It took them about one week and no friends helped them get their room ready. “This room is the only way we can deal with the fascist, pre-adolescent, narrowminded rules of this ‘kindercollege,’ but our friends are cool. Dare to reply,” Gray said. Corey Eaton and Bryan Doormen, Room 201 Taylor, personalized their room by putting up the American flag for America, Confederate flag for the real south, and the British flag to represent their heritage. They also have hats all over to accent the room. Having bunk beds adds space as well. It took Corey and Brian about four hours to get the room the way they wanted it. “Although often invaded by security and R.D.’s during vacations, it is the one place on campus that we supposedly have privacy.” Students personalized their dorm rooms in many ways in order to create a home away from home.
