Page 2 Campus News The Clarion \ Feb. 25, 2011 History of Transylvania County on display An exhibit of Transylvania County’s past and present will be on display from March 4 through 14 at Brevard College’s James A. Jones Library. The exhibit highlights the College’s vast collection of books, newspaper articles, pamphlets and materials that detail the County’s history. A series of historical photos of early Brevard will also be on display. The exhibit may be viewed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The College’s local history collection includes information on agriculture, architecture, archaeology, backpacking, biking, birds, camps, Cherokee Indians, churches, climbing, diversity, education, environment, fiction, fishing, forestry, ghosts, history, industry, libraries, logging, media, medicine, music, nature, periodicals, personal narratives, photography, pioneer families, postcards, prominent citizens, railroads, rivers, social life and customs, state parks, statistics, waterfalls, weather, white squirrels, wildlife, wildflowers, women, and more. The library also has books highlighting travel and tourism in the area, including Stephen Compton’s “Early Tourism in Western North Carolina;” Stephen Massengill’s “WestemNorth Carolina: a Visual Journey;” Robert Beverly’s “The Western North Carolina Almanac;” Lynda McDaniel’s “High Road Guide to the North Carolina Mountains;” Carolyn Sakowski’s “Touring the Western North Carolina Backroads;” C . Franklin Goldsmith’s “Best Hikes of Pisgah National Forest;” Leonard M. Adkins’ “Walking the Blue Ridge;” Bob Benner’s Carolina “Whitewater;” and Peggy Hansen’s “Touring Transylvania.” Transylvania beginnings, by Mary Jane McCrary provides a good historical account of the county’s early years. James Boykin’s book. North Carolina in 1861, provides a perspective on government, business, education and religion at the time. Nominees should be students who promote awareness of environmental stewardship and encourage others to take action, facilitating opportunities for them to do so, personally take action to solve environmental issues or contribute to the environmental welfare on campus and in our community and actively conserve resources by living responsibly, modestly and sustainably. The winner will receive a placard and a native tree planted on the campus in their honor Last year’s winner, Joe Lovenshimer, demonstrated his environmental stewardship by being a co-president of BC Greens, heading up the recycling team on campus, and by displaying environmental awareness in his everyday life.
