New emergency notification
By Patrick Veilleux
Anew notification system known as Emergency
Contact Now is being implemented at BC. The
program relays information via text and e-mail
messages in the event of a campus emergency.
While the campus security team directly
assists people of the BC community; plans
and procedures are laid out by Stan Jacobsen
and Jason Djuren. As Director of Community
Living, Djuren is in charge of campus security,
the RA selection process, and the concerns that
students bring to campus life.

Student yearbooks from Brevard College are
now available on DigitalNC.
The online collection includes a fewyearbooks
from two of the schools that preceded Brevard
College: Weaver College and Rutherford
The Brevard yearbook has been called “The
Pertelote” since 1935, the name coming from
“The Nun's Priest's Tale,” one of the Canterbury
Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, and referring to
the relationship between Brevard and Duke

Stan Jacobsen is the Director of Safety and
Risk Management at Brevard. He is responsible
for notifying students around campus of events
like the Bomb Scare at Food Lion. He is also a
firm advocate of the ECN program.
“It’s a great idea, and 1 think it will help out a
lot. We just didn’t have very many people apply
for it last semester,” said Jacobsen.
Other campuses use similar systems to notify
students and staff of threats the moment they are
reported and verified.
“This isn’t used to let people know about
free food or a basketball game. This lets people
know about serious issues on campus,” said

denomination, we elected to call our annual

for spring breal

Spring Break is finally here, but before anyone
can put some miles between Brevard and their
Spring Break destination, there are some things
dorm residents need to take care of
“Clean your room, take out your trash, and
unplug things like your alarm clock,” says
Jason Djuren, Director of Security and Student
Housing at BC.
“We want the rooms to be secure, doors
locked, and widows latched. You don’t want
to come back from the break and have things
missing,” said Djuren. “The rooms don’t have
to be spic-and-span. We are just checking to see
that there are no fire hazards like space heaters,
candles, or toaster ovens. Those things are
banned for a reason.”
Two members of the housing staff will be
coming around the residence halls and checking
all rooms to see that they are livable, safe and
locked. Dorm residents should also make sure
that there is a clear path from their door to the
window and that dishes are washed.
Students need to have everything clean and
need to leave their rooms by Saturday, March
5 at 10 a.m. “If everything is not done, then it
is on you. If you didn’t take the trash out, then
you can come back to mice and bugs, which
isn’t good. We want to avoid things like that,”
Residence halls will re-open on Sunday,
March 13 at 1 p.m.
