Page 2 Campus News The Clarion \ April 22, 2011 BC standout: Sophomore Amber Heck By Patrick Veilleux Staff Writer Sophomore Amber Heck has heard numerous jokes about her last name, “It’s gotten to the point where I just introduce myself with a joke. “So it’s nice to meet you. I’m Amber Heck, as in what the!?” Since her arrival last semester, Heck has been on the Deans Board, is currently an SGA Senator, and has recently joined the Brevard Cheer Leading Squad. While she devotes her time to SGA, the cheer squad, her studies, and working with CAB; Heck does have time for hobbies. These include dancing, watching anime, and reading science fiction. Her favorites include “Hellsing,” “Ghost in a Shell,” “Akira,” and as she put it most importantly “Gundam.” She also has a love for cosplay, a type of performing art in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent specific characters or ideas. The participants go to conventions in costume and take part in and host events and programs. Heck has taken part in two such conventions for which she has designed two costumes. She is currently in the process of preparing for a third. “We don’t even bring real clothes, it’s completely in costume! I went out to eat and BC to present student directed, ten-minute plays From April 28 through 30, the Department of Theatre Studies at Brevard College will present a highly entertaining evening of short plays, all chosen and directed by students. From one woman’s obsession with chocolate, to an unusual, Welsh ritual surrounding death, there is great variety in subject among the eleven plays, which include “The Stronger,” by August Strindberg, “The Divine Fallacy,” by Tina Howe, “Hippie Van Gumdrop,” by Dan LeFranc, “The Sin-eater,” by Don Nigro, “Swan Song,” by Anton Chekhov, “Ohio Impromptu,” by Samuel Beckett, “The Chocolate Affair,” by Stephanie Allison Walker, “Seeing the Light,” by Robert McKay, “After,” by Carol K. Mack, “The First Fireworks,” by Alex Broun, and “Body Talk,” by Tanya Palmer The plays will be performed at The Morrison Playhouse in The Porter Center, on the Brevard College campus. Admission is free, but seating is limited; so, tickets are recommended. Tickets can be picked up at The Porter Center Box Office, open Monday through Friday, 2 to 4 p.m., or an hour before curtain. Curtain time for all evening performances is at 8 pm. I was in costume, it would be like that all weekend,” said Heck. Dressed as the female deuteragonist of Inuy asha, Heck went to a Raleigh Animazement convention as Kagome. “It was like being at Disney, everyone wanted to take pictures. I would take two steps and people would shout and ask to be part of a picture with me,” said Heck. “I bumped into half a dozen other people dressed as characters from the series. After the cons I could find pictures of myself on other people’s Facebook profiles who I had met for the first time at the convention.” Heck was home schooled before entering college, and that before her involvement at Brevard there was very little school activity. “It’s really new, and lots of fun. I have danced most of my life, so I think that helps with the cheerleading,” said Heck. She has thrown herself into the Brevard communal environment and harmonized with it without fear of the idea of student involvement, an idea that may seem daunting to other home schooled students. While she claims that her choice in coming to BC was spur of the moment, Heck also states that now that she is here, she cannot imagine being anywhere else. Heck enjoys BC for its small campus atmosphere, where the student to teacher ratio encourages professor involvement on campus and a willingness and ability to assist students in need. “I can know every single person on campus, and the student to teacher ratio is great. I also don’t need a car; my favorite mode of transportation is the shoe leather express, the sole train,” she said. Heck’s long term goals include pursuing a career in dermatology, and travel. She plans on eventually retiring in France. “As for BC itself, I plan to just keep doing whatl’m doing; make friends, have fun, do well, and really be active in the school.” This Week on Campus Fellowship of Christian Athletes(FCA): Meets every Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the Spiritual Life Center.
