April 29, 2011 | The Clarion Arts & Life Page 7 'An Evening of Ten Minute Plays' nearly sells out opening night By David Alexander Copy Editor Brevard College Theatre’s spring production entitled An Evening of Ten Minute Plays was a success on opening night. As is tradition both Friday and Saturday night of the play are already sold out as people got their tickets early in elated expectation. An Evening of Ten Minute Plays consists of eleven student directed plays lasting roughly ten minutes each. Some of the plays are funny, some are serious, and others just didn’t make much sense. “The Chocolate Affair” had the entire audience laughing at the performances of Christina Nelson, Kyle Jackola, and Ki’era Gash. “The Stronger” was a highly intensive irony filled shouting match between Kara Ontiveros’ character and Liz Ramsey’s character The plot of this short play remained unclear until the end. However, with the conclusion of the play came a heartfelt emotion few lines that surprised and captivated the audience. “Seeing the Light” which was directed by Adrian Wagner is a play about the inevitably of the end of the world. It is a humorous portrayal of the conversations that could possibly take place when “Doom’s Day” finally arrives. “The First Fireworks” directed by Erika Packard was one of the more serious plays of the night. A play about hopes that never came true, regrets, and future promises; this play delivered on a level far deeper in the emotional spectrum than any play so far in the production. “The Sin-Eater” starring Addison Dent, Jordan Kahili, and Ki’era Gash was a comical take on the popular Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet. The healing powers of love were summoned in this play to save the life of a misdiagnosed dead woman. The depth of love displayed between the two main characters is astounding. “Hippie Van Gumdrop” stars only Christie Bethard and Kara Ontiveros. The short play is funny, insightful, and filled with filthy language. This play is about the love and loss that daughter’s feel when their mother dies. Sisters, though they may be, they are complete opposites and the play builds around the tension felt between them. “The Divine Fallacy” directed by Kaitlyn Wood is about personal perceptions of people. The images and expectations that we have can often times blind us to the realizations that are in front of us. This play says so much in only ten minutes. “Ohio Impromptu” is one of the plays that I just couldn’t understand. You are a better thespian than me if you can find the meaning in the play. Although I tried I found myself lost and once I was lost I could never find my way back. The performance of Adrian Wagner and Ian Baker are superb Western Omelet in a Bag ChefBoy-R-Dave Average Cost of Meal: $10-15 Prep Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 10 minutes Serving Size: 4 Ingredients: 2 Eggs Onion Ham Salt and Pepper Cheese 1 Tablespoon of Milk Green Pepper Instructions: Put a large pot of water on the stove and bring to a boil. Crack 2 eggs into a Ziploc and add a little salt and pepper and mix. Cut up in a small dice all the other ingredients and add it to the bag. Work all the air out of the bag and drop into the boiling water for 13 minutes. After 13 min utes take the bag out of the water and cut it open. Dump the fully cooked, fully formed omelet out onto a plate and enjoy. but the content of the play itself was over this reviewer’s head. “Body Talk” is a play about self image. The portrayals of sadness and disillusionment by all three characters are moving and evict emotions from many of the audience members. “Swan Song” is the final play of the night and it ends the play on a serious and seriously funny note. The short play is about a life that has passed by and has a message for the audience about slowing down and savoring each moment as it happens. The performance of Addison Dent and Cameron Kahili brought the evening to a climax and left everyone wanting a twelfth play. “On a 12 point scale, I give it a 12,” said Clint Dewitt. Kevin Manion was at a lost for words saying, “Exceptional, unexpected, unique, surprising, fun. Everyone should go and see it.” “It was a great choice of plays and they were all well directed. All of the plays were very interesting and a special note of congratulations to Alex Tompkins for his dedication and hard work. The lighting was exceptional,” said student Dave Bergman. Kara Ontiveros, an actor in two of the plays, said, “I liked them. I thought all of the plays were awesome, but obviously I am going to say that.” PAX AfsJD KEVXisJ — Apo ITT”! ^^ It's 5 rotxp oj^ 5-ttAdLet-L^ cKKe 5'tre-srecL 5‘Leep I * * - ^f ^ C7 _ . * ci^epr vve Cartoon by Karam Boeshaar
