Page 6 Arts & Life The Clarion \ Oct. 14, 2011 Mountain unicycling mal(es its way to Brevard By Carolina Anderson staff Writer David Lackey is a Junior Wilderness Education major at Brevard College and when he’s not in the classroom or backpacking through the woods. Lackey spends his time with a somewhat more unique sport. Not only is Lackey a member of Brevard’s Climbing Club and Ultimate Frisbee team, but Lackey also has picked up a new hobby, mountain unicycling. When did you begin unicycling? The summer before my freshman year of college. What’s it like (unicycling)? It’s like sitting on a big wheel. What sparked your interest in cycling? My dad rides- so I grew up always wanting to leam. How did you learn how to ride? My dad taught me, and I watched Youtube videos. You mountain unicycle as well as just regular cycUng, how do the two differ? Mountain unicycling is done on mountain bike trails. It uses more balance and different techniques such as hopping. Regular unicycling is riding on roads and sidewalks. Is unicycUng a scary sport? Regular unicycling is not nearly as “scary” as mountain unicycling. And with that, just the descents are the sketchy part. Have you ever had a really bad crash? I have never been injured while unicycling but I have come close and while mountain unicycling I have had to chase my unicycle down the side of a mountain. Have you ever competed? No, unicycling is more of a hobby. How is unicycling different from the other sports that you play? There’s a different type of balance and endurance that is required then in any other sport I have played. Where do you go mountain unicycling? I have only been on Black Mountain trail. Thrift Cove trail. Near the Davidson River campground, and near Turkey Pen. Do you know other mountain cycUsts? I only know one other Mountain unicyclist named Jack Igelman. He is the head of the Mountain unicycle association in Asheville, and one of the coordinators of The Mountain Unicycle festival, which is held in Pisgah this year m OJ (U u (/) 1 u ru _i OJ Q} (A WWW. vimeo. com/bcclarion David Lackey shows off his unicycling skills in the academic quad.
