BC joined the rest of Transylvania County in
its 26 Annual Unity in the Community Martin
Luther King Jr. Celebration. The celebration
consisted of a community brunch on Saturday,
Jan. 16 at Bethel “A” Baptist Church, sign mak
ing on Sunday at BC for “The Walk to Change”
march on Monday through downtown Brevard
that would end at BC’s Porter center where it
would be concluded with a program that night.
Many BC students started the celebratory
weekend off bright and early at Bethel “A”
Baptist Church Saturday to show their support
for the twentieth anniversary of the Rise &
Shine Freedom School and Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. Day. The morning was busy serving
hot food and beverages and familiarizing the
students with residents from the community.
Some students like Kris Odom, a second
semester freshmen and environmental studies
major, wanted to make a good first impression
in hopes he can intern at the after-school pro
gram in the future. “ It was cool to see people
of all races and backgrounds come together
to celebrate M.L.K. Day,” Odom said. “This
brunch showed to me just how much the com
munity of Brevard is united.”
After the meal was served and the chatting
began to cease, Ed Buckley, a member of The
Human Relations Council for Brevard and
Transylvania County (HRC), gave a hearty talk
and coordinated activities involving everyone
in the room.
The council also provided voter registration
information and restated how important it is
for residents to voice their opinions, just what
Dr.King fought for, by using the power of vot
ing in the coming elections.

name of the MLK March, was much colder

Daniel Dittman
joins BC post office
By Alex Laifer
staff Writer
Despite the fact that Daniel Dittman may
be new in his role as the mail clerk for BC’s
Campus Post Office, he is anything but inex
perienced.
Dittman was bom and raised in Wisconsin.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin
with a degree in business. He moved to Naples,
Florida and worked in the banking industry.
He went on to become the Vice President and
Branch Manager at 1 st National Bank. 20 years
ago, he moved to Brevard and decided to switch
careers. He worked at the United States Postal
Services processing plant in Asheville where he
sorted and processed mail for 16 years. He has
always been happy living in Brevard specifi
cally with its outdoor theme.
He retired from USPS in 2014 but didn’t
stay in it for long. He wanted to fill in time and
jumped on the opportunity to become the new
part-time mail clerk. However, his favorite part
of his job is; “Being in a college atmosphere
and working with young students.”
Dittman is a family man. Last August, he had
his 40th wedding anniversary with his wife Kar
en. He has three children - Danielle, Michelle,
David, and he now has three grandchildren.
The next time you go to the campus post of
fice to get a package in the afternoon, you will
likely be getting it from Dittman.
