PAGE 4 THE SKIRL TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1955 IRC Celebrates Tenth Birthday Party The IRC party was held Feb ruary 11 at 6:40 in the right front parlor. Special guests were Dr. and Mrs. Woodson, Mrs. Mc Cain, and Miss Hazel Morrison. Special games were directed by Becky Williams. They were “per colating”, and one in which dif ferent teams acted out famous Quotations for the other side to guess. Dr. Woodson taught them how to play a game called “John Brown’s Body.” Harriet McAu- ley cut the birthday cake which was beautifully decorated with red icing roses. Miss Robertson decorated the table which was covered by a valentine table cloth. Nuts, mints, and special vanilla and strawberry iee cream was also served. Miss Robertson organized the IRC ten years ago in January. Since then it has become one of the most outstanding IRC groups in the state. The purpose of the club is to promote better relations among races and na tions and also to gain a better understanding and knowledge of what is going on in the nations. At every meeting two topics of major interest are discussed and one topic of over-all current events. Heard Around The Corner By “Peeps” Hello, Last weekend was really a big one for the girls at FMC, espe cially for the girls who went to the dances at Fort Bragg and PJC. We’ve seen uniforms from all the branches of the armed forces, Clemson, and who knows, now, maybe we’ll be seeing something of the “Citadel Men”. Did you all know that red with black and white accessor ies is just the vogue for spring and summer. Shoes will be light er in color with White Sand (the color of desert moonlight) and “Coffee Frost” (taffy color) pre dominating. Not to be forgot ten, are the blues and grays. Have any of you played Galypso? It’s a combination of Canasta and Bridge. Sounds fas cinating, doesn’t it? I suppose by now that each of you is familiar with the re cords “Make Yourself Comforta ble” and “I Gotta Crow”. The latter may never be a hit, but it surely is different. Something new was added at the Freshmen-Sophomore Dance —appearance of long gloves. Flora Macdonald girls are be ginning to realize that it’s fun to dress correctly and accord ing to the styles which are so evident in the other colleges Did you know that rutabagas were turnips and that an angle cannot be trisected? KENNEDY’S Jewelry & Gift Shop Phone 4341 Red Springs, N.C. “We Serve to Serve Again” Two new books have been ad ded to our library. They were given by the Faculty and Staff of Flora Macdonald College in memory of Robert Bruce Gwynn, brother of Dr. Price H. Gwynn, Jr., Dean of the College. One of these books is Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histo ries, and Tragedies, a facsimile edition of the First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays issued in 1623. The contents include all cf the thirty-seven plays now published in the complete works of Shakespeare. There is an in troduction by Charles Tyler Prouty, professor of English at Yale. The other book is Ham mond’s Ambassador World Atlas. One of the most useful and fas cinating features of this Atlas is the extensive index that in cludes all cities and towns and physical features on the maps in the collection. Throughout the index are photographs of inter esting places and street maps of the world’s leading cities, show ing locations of places of inter est to tourists and businessmen. Both students and faculty are very grateful for these gifts. They are a valuable addition to the library and will be very use ful to all.
