SGA Performs Traditional
African Ceremonies For
Miss ECSU
Student Government
Association and the Jun
ior Class performed the
Coronation Ball this year
in traditional African.
Following the pattern set
by SGA president Eddie
Davis, the ceremony was
very colorful and beauti
ful and so was the coro
nation ball itself.
One of the highlights of
the ceremony was the
ceremony of the stools.
This ceremony is a ba
sic carryover from last
year. The ceremony of
the seven stools is sym
bolic to the out-going and
in-coming queens. The
queen passes from stool
to stool making a sacred
commitment at each
stool. The ritual is con
ducted with low lighting in
strictly African decora
tion and design. Darryl
Morris, outgoing presi
dent of the Student Gov
ernment Association and
the nomination commit
tee continued the tradi
tion and therefore kept
the student body and the
candidates in suspicion
for two weeks. The an
nouncement of the new
queen was therefore ex
citing and rewarding.The
out-going Miss ECSU
Miss Carol Ann Haw
kins, a Senior Business
Major crowned the new
queen, both sisters very
beautifully donned in Af
rican print.
The traditional Afri
can attire was used for
the coronation. Sisters
and Brothers wore Das-
hikis and sandals. The
color and beauty added
to the momentous and me
morable event.
The presentation of the
new queen and runner ups,
the presentation of gifts
to the queen and other ac
tivities added to the sym
bolism of the blackness
