Page 2, The Newt> Argus, September, 1980 March And Rally Will Support Black Colleges September is Black College Month ind it will culminate in a gigantic march and rally in Washington, D.C., on Monday, September 29th-Black College Day ’80. “This march and rally is as much a demonstratic.i of seif-help as it is a protest against the sinister destruction of Black colleges by policies of the Of fice or Civil Rights of the Department oi' Education and Jack Greenberg’s NAACP Legal Defense Fund.” From the time that Tony Brown issued that statement and “a call for nelp from anyone interested in stopp- ,ng this trend,” the response to the call o save Black colleges has been so over- .vhelming that estimates of an atten dance figure have gone as high as a half miUion people. Some 80 to 90 schools have indicated ihai they will send representatives to the I'ally. Elizabeth City, Fayetteville, and North Carolina Central are among the schools in North Carolina that have responded, said Brown. “Our crowd will be significant in size, by any standard, but more impor tantly it will be comprised of the pre sent and future opinion makers of Black America,” Brown added. “Fur thermore, it will signal the beginning of a long-term effort to revitalize interest in the 107 traditionally Black colleger and to draw attention to the threat to their continued existence. Without these schools, we would lose over 50 percent of the Blacks who now finish college.” The march and rally, sponsored by The Project ’80 Coalition for Black Colleges, will also include a “Festival of Black College Marching Bands,” featuring many of the best marching bands from the Black college cam puses. “Miss Black College Day” and her court will be chosen from the pool of all 107 Black college queens. The winner will be, literally, a “queen of queens.” She will receive a one-year contract to work in a public relations capacity for Pepsi-Cola Company. The rally will feature scholars, civil rights leaders, students and opinion leaders who are experts on the historical value of Black colleges and the details of the respective so-called desegregation plans and governmental funding programs. Presidential can didates Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and John Anderson are invited to ad dress the rally. Also, Black College Day workshops are scheduled for Sun day, September 28th, at Howard’s Blackburn University Center. Brown, producer of “Tony Brown’s Journal” on commercial television, syndicated columnist and former dean of the School of Communications at Howard University, while working on this project the past two years, said his involvement in Black college survival began three years ago when he produc ed a television documentary, “Are (See Black College, Page 5) Homecoming Will Begin Oct. 12 sponsor a disco from 9:00 p.m. until.
