Page 4, The News Argus, September 1982 John McGuirc, Little Man With Big Plans By Lyndell Ingram You might say John McGuire is a big man on campus, then again, you might not. An 18-year old freshman from Mt. Gilead, N.C., he’s already earned the confidence of his peers as evidenced by his election to the presidency of Bickett Hall. But at 4 feet 2 inches tall, he looks up to almost everybody. Even though he is small, he has big plans for life. His major is business administra tion and his minor is mass communica tions. His plans are to be his own boss in a radio station and to become a disc jockey one day. Johnnie does not let big things get into his path and stop his progress. If something gets in his path, he just goes around or through it. He believes that if someone wants something bad enough they can obtain it, if they really want it. Although Winston-Salem State has had a few little people in the past such as this writer (a former “Mr. Mini”), and Wrestler Milton Hardee, Johnnie is the most recent. His decision to come here was because he felt that this university has something to offer everyone. He said that he wanted to go to a black college and one not too large. “The people around here seem to be friendly and pretty together,” says Johnnie. Standing at 4 feet 2 inches could create problems, however when you see him walk around campus, he adjusts. Just because |he is a little shorter does not mean he needs people to do everything for him. He very seldom asks for anyone to do anything. Johnnie does not feel that being short is a handicap. “It’s super to be short and he says he hkes the publicity.” At his high school. West Montgomery, he was statistician for its basketball team. He hopes to become a statistician here. It does not take someone big to handle a big job all the time as long as you get the job done. Johnnie’s hobbies are fishing, hunting, basketball, dancing, and he likes clubbing. He also likes the ladies. He does not discriminate because a young lady might be taller than he is because size does not make any difference as long as she enjoys his company. When asked what kind of woman he preferred, he simply said 5 foot 5 and fine as can be. Althou^ he’s free as a bird, he says he’s taking applications. His philosophy of life is: “Getting a big bang out of life.” His motto: “Small enough to know you, large enough to serve you.” Words can’t size up the big plans of freshman John McGuire.
