Oft' New members welcomed to Chowan ’5 faculty, staff Lisa Blockus ^Text and Photographs by FRANCES EASON, Staff Writer In the Office of Student Life.. Lisa Blockus appointed director of student involvement Lisa Blockus, director of student involvement under the direction of Dr Edward Dadez, vice president for student life, shows great enthusiasm for Chowan students. A former resident of Colum bus, Ohio, Blockus attended Bucknell University where she received a B.A. in psychology and 'j ^ education. She later attended the University of San jV ^ Diego where she earned an M. A. in counseling. I ' After college Blockus worked at Ball State “ University as the assistant director of leadership and service program. She was also involved with leadership development, advising sororities on campus, and working with the religious council. Blockus believes that Chowan’s students have a real chance to build a community. “The location may leave us a little more deprived cuhurally, but the campus is much more cohesive in a small town,” Blockus explained. As director of student involvement, Blockus believes that her goal is to help students balance academics and activities in a way that will allow students to become involved in campus events. Blockus stated that she was attracted to Chowan’s potential and positive attitude towards change. According to Blockus, “Chowan’s personal approach to educa tion is very beneficial to the students.” Blockus added that she “can feel the sense of community growing among students.” Outside of work, Lisa enjoys sailing, snow skiing, and volunteering her time at the YMCA and the Battered Woman’s Shelter Sten Swanston assumes post as assistant in student involvement “Chowan has great potential.” according to Sten Swanston, the new assistant director of student involvement at Chowan. Swanston is eager to work with students and learn what they would like to see happen at Chowan and help them accomplish their goals. As a former student at Bucknell University, Swanston believes that the size of Chowan’s campus will help bring the college community closer as well as allow students to be more creative. A 1996 graduate of Bucknell, Swanston re ceived a B.A. in psychology. He is originally from Weston. Connecticut, where his parents reside. Apart from work, he enjoys running. Swanston looks forward to helping the campus community progress. Dr. Dadez Sten Swanston Dr. Edward Dadez named vice president for student life With an enthusiastic support staff. Dr Edward Dadez will serve as the vice president for student life. Dadez formerly served as associate dean at Bucknell University, resident student life director at Michigan State University, and resident director at the University of Dayton, Ohio. He and his wife, Terry, along with their two children, Mike and Rob. now reside in Murfreesboro. Dadez received the B.S. in biology and psychol ogy from Virginia Commonwealth Univer sity, the M.A. in college student personnel from Ohio State University, and the Ph.D. in college and university adminis tration from Michigan State University. Dadez believes that the key to a successful campus community is to “bring more cultural and social activities to campus for the benefit of the students.” When asked what attracted him to campus, Dadez said, “Chowan was a school I was familiar with, A lot of high school friends came to Chowan and it was interesting to see that there was a position available. When being interviewed, I became more and more excited about the opportunities and the challenges of leading a student life program that would assist in the growth and development of students and establish a positive, healthy campus community.” Dadez is confident that the faculty and student interaction in and out of the class room is a major benefit to the campus commu nity. As the vice president for student life, Dadez believes that his biggest responsibility is to “respond to the issues, concerns, and needs of the students and to develop plans and strategies to affect change at the col lege.” Outside of work. Dadez enjoys spend ing time with family and playing outdoor sports. In the Office of Business Affairs.. Lefevre named interim vice president for business affairs ^Originally hired as Chief Fiscal ofiicer, Dick Lefevre quickly assumed additional responsibilities in the office of business affairs. With over 25 years of experience in the accounting field, Lefevre formerly operated his own public accounting service and served as Controller of Morral Chemical Company, a subsid iary of Country mark Co-op, Inc. The father of four grown children, he and his wife, Jan, reside in Murfreesboro. Lefevre received his B.B.A. in accounting from Ohio University and his M B A. from Dayton University. He maintains CPA licenses for both Ohio and North Carolina. Lefevre first learned of the opening at Chowan m' MM through the Internet. When asked what features of Chowan attracted him, Lefevre replied, “Chal lenges, opportunities, the beauty of the campus and the people. I felt that the staff could work well together to move Chowan successfully into the future.” Lefevre believes that his largest challenge is “to address the needs of the school and remain financially viable. Deferred maintenance, technologi cal improvements and student life enhancements need to be addressed in order to be competitive in the educational marketplace.” As key to a successful campus community Lefevre believes that “mutual respect, trust in one another and open lines of communication” are of utmost importance. A native of Mount Vernon, Ohio, Lefevre enjoys time with his family, historical preservation, travel and golf Page 4 — CHOWAN TODAY, September 1996 Rictiard Lefevre Fillingim named campus minister Malinda Fillingim has been in Christian ministry for 19 years. She taught in the School of Theology at Southern Seminary and has been the chaplain for many hospitals, nursing homes, and mental instiUitions. Fillingim will serve as the interim campus minister at Chowan College. Her husband. Dr David Fillingim. assistant professor of religion and philosophy, had been hired for a teaching position when the position of campus minister also opened. Fillingim believes that “this job was an unex pected blessing.” As a mother of two daughters, Hope, 8, and Hannah, 5, Fillingim is pleased with the warm and personal attitude the people of Murfreesboro display toward her &mily She believes that Chowan offers the student a “Christian environment in which to grow and develop his or her own morals and values in life.” She anticipates helping Aaron Carroll Malinda Fillingim facilitate the spiritual development of Chowan students. Fillingim studied two years of clinical pastoral education before earning a masters of social work from the University of South Carolina. She later received a master of divinity degree at Southeastern Seminary. Fillingim grew up in Walnut Cove, North Carolina. Her hobbies include spending time with her family, writing, bicychng and natwe. Fillingim hopes to “become much more active in churches and the community.” In the Department of Athletics... Carroll to serve as assistant coach Aaron Carroll will serve as the assistant baseball coach under the direction of Coach Steve Flack. Carroll, a ‘96 graduate of Chowan, re ceived the B.S. in physical education. He and his wife, Joni, currently reside in Murfreesboro. Carroll served as student assistant coach at Chowan for one-and-a- half years, and head varsity coach at Northampton East High School last year. Carroll stated that he was attracted to Chowan because of baseball and the faa that “Chowan is a small school in the South.” As a coach, Carroll believes that his biggest responsibility is to “make sure that the athletes are working hard to get their degree and stay in line.” Carroll likes to hunt and fish in his spare time. Eason joinsfootball staff Dan Eason graduated from Southwest Missouri State with a B.S. in dietetics and a minor in exercise science. He is originally from Sioax City, Iowa, where his parents and three brothers currently reside. Eason will serve as the assistant football coach under the direc tion of Coach Dan Surface. Dan Eason He believes that the individual attention placed on students is a great benefit at Chowan. As a coach. Eason hopes to “give student athletes a chance to be successfiil on and off the field.” Eason enjoys playing sports and being outdoors. Hampton named assistant coach Brian Hampton of Boone, North Carolina, will serve as an assistant football coach under the direction of Coach Dan Surface. A 1996 graduate of Emory & Henry College in St. Abingdon. Virginia, Hampton “feels right at home” at Chowan College. “The climate is a lot warmer than it is on the mountain, but the f)eople are really nice and friendly,” Hampton explained. He stated that his first impression of Chowan was, “Emory & Henry College all over again except it's hotter and flatter” Before being hired at Chowan, Hampton Continued on next page
