served as the assistant coach at Emon- & Henry College for three years. He was attracted to Chowan when he was interviewed by Coach Surface and Coach Garrison. “The interview really made me see that they were really good people with Christian Brian Hampton backgrounds. They really know what they are talking about with football,” stated Hampton. As a coach, Hampton believes that it is his responsibility to “try and relate football to real life as much as possible. There are a lot of ups and downs with footbaU and life. You have to learn’ how to bounce back when you get knocked down,” Hampton added Outside of football, Hampton loves to fly fish. Varble to assist as athletic trainer “It’s quiet, but people are really friendly,” stated Rachelle Varble, the new assistant athletic trainer. \^tble added. “This is a place where you can focus on your studies. There aren’i quite so many distrac tions.” Varble is originally from St. Peters, Missouri, where her parents and brother, Brian, currently reside. She is a 1994 graduate Rachelle Varble of Cumberland College with a B.S. in public health. She is currently finishing her M.S. at the United States Sports Academy. Varble was interested in Chowan’s internship program and she knew Stacy Sage, head athletic trainer. Outside of work, Varble enjoys playing vollevball. listenine to music and reading. Her main goal as an athletic trainer is to “make sure the athletes are healthy and can play.” Marion takes post in basketball John Marion will serve as the assistant men’s basketball coach under the direction of Coach Bob Burke. Marion attended Pinola Junior College for one year and transferred to Southwest Texas State University with a bas ketball scholarship. He received the B.S. in 1994. The same year Southwest Texas State advanced to the first round of the midwest regional of the NCAA tournament in Wichita. Kansas, before losing to the University of Massachusetts. Marion served as graduate assistant coach at Southwest Texas State foi one-and-a-half years and full-time assistant coach at Lee Junior College in Houston. He is originially from New Orleans, Louisiana. Marion admitted that he has had to learn to adjust to a small working environment but finds the faculty, staff and student relationships benefi cial. Marion believes that this will be a good year for Chowan basketball. “We have a strong group of freshmen who seem very determined to succeed. We can hit some high peaks.” he stated. Marion has helped with several summer basketball camps and has made friends in the area. “Many people recommended that I talk to Coach Bob Burke; he is known in the busi ness.” Marion explained. He hopes to help the team “make the most of themselves and earn their degrees.” Marion enjoys the outdoors, watching movies and all types of sporting activities. John Marion In the Office of Student in the Office of Information Shannon Vick Enrollment... Former teacher takes admissions position Shannon Vick, a former Chowan student, was hired to serve as a new admissions counselor. She and her husband, Sammy, and their 13 year-old daughter, Whitney, live in Newsoms, Vu-gi^iia. Vick attended Chowan from 1965 to 1967. She transferred to Barton College and earned the B.S. in business administration. After a period of time. Vick decided to return to school to earn a teaching certificate. She taught kindergarten in Southamp ton County for 14 years. She stated that she “al ways wanted to work in higher education.” “Chowan has seemed peaceful ever since I was here. When you drive around that circle, you always feel at home.” Vick added. She believes that Chowan adds a certain amount of struc ture to students’ lives. Vick enjoys reading, going to concerts and plays, playing the piano and spending lots of time in Nags Head, North Carolina. In the Office of Development... Kay Parker joins secretarial staff in college relations, alumni services “Chowan offers a good, solid foundation on which students can build their lives,” accord ing to Kay Parker, the new secretary to the director of college relations and the director of alumni services. Parker stated that the “envi ronment at Chowan is very Christ-like and people try to help one another succeed.” As a mother of two boys, Raymond, 19, and Carlos, 17, Parker believes that her biggest responsi bility in life is to teach hei children how to achieve a successful life filled with Parker happiness and hard work. She married Steve Parker on September 20. Parker is a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church and enjoys engrav ing glass in her free time. In the Office of Human Resources Deacon to assist resources director Stephanie Deacon will serve as the assis tant to the director of human resources and institutional services. Deacon and her hus band, John, reside in Jackson, North Carolina. She is a graduate of Campbell University, with a B.A. in religion. Deacon served as the minister of children at Galatia Baptist Church and as an “At Risk” social worker for Halifax Social Services. Deacon also served as the librarian for Wilson County Public Librarj’. Sh( enjoys walking and sewing. “1 like working at a Baptist college. I find the campus beautiful and a safe place to work,” Deacon concluded. Stephanie Deacon Robert FiM Technology... Futrell named to computer position With technology changing quickly, Chowan College is working hard to stay on top. Robert Futrell of Four Oaks, North Carolina, has been hired as the network administrator under the direction of Dr Andrea Eason, director of information technology. Futrell will be in charge of the maintenance and supervision of all campus networking, printers, students workers, etc. A 1996 graduate of Chowan College, Futrell received a B. S. in business administration with an emphasis in computer information systems. Futrell’s father. Rev. Felix A Futrell. is also a graduate of Chowan. In his spare time, Futrell enjoys playing sports. In the Department of Printing and Imaging Technology.. Philip Age named chairman of PPIT Philip D. Age was named chairman of the printing production and imaging technology department in Chowan’s Homer School of Graphic Communications. Age has over 20 years of experience in the field. He is a 1972 graduate of California State University, where he received the B.A. in industrial education. He also received the M. A from California State in 1975. During his college career, Age worked for the Walt Disney Corpo ration, where he supervised employ ees. He is originally from Hunting ton Beach, California, but enjoys the geographical location of Chowan. Age is interested in surfing, spending time with his family, reading and photography. Age admits that his first impression of Chowan was “a diamond in the rough.” Age is very excited about raising the graphics program to a national level. He enjoys the smallness of the college, the personal relationship with students and instructors, and the Christian principles on which the school is based. Age believes that his biggest responsi bility as an educator is to “make sure the students are prepared to be functional and productive in our society.” Former GATF instructor to teach graphics Mike Steczak stated. “Each community has a plus for the students whether the community be large or small.” As far as Chowan is concerned. Steczak believes that the “smallness of the college and the closeness of the faculty and students” is important. Originally from Berlin, Maryland, Steczak will serve as an instructor in the printing production and imaging technology department. Steczak and his wife, Cheryl, have three children Joseph. 18, Mellisa, 23, and John Michael, 28. Steczak formerly was in charge of the technical program for the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation in Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania. The foundation is an educational research foundation serving the graphic communications industry. Steczak taught at Ball State Univer sity in Muncie, Indiana. Steczak stated that he has always liked the North Carolina are£ and was interested in living here. He is impressed by the close. personal relationship between students and professors and the the opportunity to help students succeed.
