Parsons’ name will enter the record books as a career leader in both scoring and rebounding for the Lady Braves four-year basketball program. Her credits include 26 career double-doubles and a 10.8 scoring average. In addition, she shares the all-time single game rebounding record with 20. Parsons not only walked away with the Women’s Basketball Most Valuable Player award at the Spring Athletic Banquet but was also honored with the Coaches and Most Improved awards for the Woman’s Tennis Team. Not bad for a young leidy from Franklin, Va. who first attended Chowan in 1985, then a junior college, and returned nine years later to pivsue her academic and athletic goals. The absence of four years of athletic competition was just another challenge Parsons took on in her classic hard-work style. “Physically I was not where I needed to be, but being older I was much more mentally prepared for the challenges that were ahead of me. I am very happy I was able to fmish something I started,” Parsons commented. Parsons takes a great deal of pride in the fact that she will be the first female in her family to graduate with a college degree. “I am now on the verge of completing my education while having the experience of competing on the collegiate level.” Through sheer determination and a tremendous work ethic. Parsons was able to reach both the academic and athletic goals she set for herself She is on track to graduate in December with a bachelor of arts degree in sports science. The summer will be very busy for this hardworking student as she completes an internship at the YMCA in Smithfield, Va. The driving force behind Parsons is her never-give-up attitude. She plans to continue her education by working toward a master's degree in exercise science from Old Ek>minion University. She is a winner who made it happen. Performing a vital role in the lives of student athletes, members of the Braves Club provide both outstanding motivational encouragement and financial support to the athletic programs of Chowan. Members include alumni, parents and friends \^ho all share one thing in common: they love sports, especially Chowan College athletics. Chowan is proud of the young men and women involved in its athletic programs and believes that providing students with the opportunity to gain valuable experience through intercollegiate athletics and competitive sports contributes to a total education. At Chowan, members of the athletic department encourage students to become all that they can be. Devoting inspiration to both athletes and staff, the Braves Club history reflects both the generosity of its members and the extent of their interest in Chowan’s young men and women with such recent accomplishments as; ♦ Leasing two 15-passenger vans for athletic team travel ♦ FHirchasing a commercial washer and dryer for the field house ♦ Consfructing brick dugouts for the women’s softball program ♦ Purchasing new netting for baseball and softball batting cages ♦ Purchasing new football blocking pads ♦ Sponsoring the Athletic Hall of Fame banquet A membership in the Braves Club will help the organization provide increased opportunities for student-athletes at Chowan College and contributions (less the value of benefits received) are fully tax deductible at the state and the federal level.
