THVRSDAT, FEBRUARY 25. 1965 THE DECREE PAGE 7 Wesleyan Cops Third Place Hines Voted Most Valuable Player Bob Hines has lead Wesleyan to a third place in the D.I.A.C. tournamant. His outstanding point average of 25 and his re bounding of 17 per game led Wes leyan to an upset victory over Charleston and nearly into the finals. However, we were edged' out by a 4 point win by Lynch burg College and had to settle for third place. This was accomplished by defeating St. Andrews College, 71-66 The tournament opened with an overwhelming victory by St. An drews over Methodist, which placed our notorious rival in a secure sixth place. In the se cond game , Wesleyan issued a surprising defeat over the College of Charleston by a nar row final score of 64-62. Wes leyan opened a wide margin early in the game, with a 17-5 lead, but Charleston battled back to a close this gap within a few points and took a 2 point lead twice; in the closing minutes. On the second night, Wesleyaji was narrowly defeated, 81-77, by Lynchburg College who were the eventual tournament champions. The Bishops held Lynchburg’s big scorer Wayne Proffit to 26 points. He scored 45 points in the championship game against Charlotte College the final night. It seemed someone put a lid on the Bishops basket the first 10 minutes of the game but then the team loosened up and made good their nickname, “The Battling Bishops” but were unable to go in front and Lynchburg froze the ball. In the other second-round game Charlotte College beat St. An drews by 18 points. This resulted in Charlotte College playing Lynchburg College for the Championship and St. Andrews playing Wesleyan in the consol ation game. In the consolation game Wes leyan defeated St, Andrews by 5 points, 71-66, Don Hines held St. Andrews star Benny Brock- well to 17 points while scoring 30 points himself. Despite the close half-time score Lynchburg defeated Char lotte going away by a margin of 16 points, 77-61, in the champ ionship game. It appears that this tournament is a foreshadow of things to come for it points to a great season next year for the Bishops who have worked so hard and have finally achieved outstanding re sults as a team and in the per son of Don Hines. Isn’t it a shame that the at tendance of Wesleyan students was so poor and that the coop eration! with the school press was lacking greatly! It would seem to me that in order to ob tain good publicity, cooperation with the news media is impera tive. THEME (Continued From Page Five) Department of Sociology at East Carolina College.
