A well-balanced North Carolina Wesleyan scoring attack fell three points short of victory as the visiting Maroons from Char leston, South Carolina, became the victors and boosted their conference record to 5-4. Wes leyan is now 2-8 in conference play and seemingly, will have to flip for 5th and 6th place with St. Andrews College for tourna ment berths. George Watson, the Bishops’ lanky 6 foot 4 inch center, took some time to start his offensive, but when he did, there was no chance of stopping him. Wat son ended up the night with 24 points, strong assistance came from the other four starters. Lloyd Nelson was second with 19 points, but It should be noted Bishops End Losing Streak Our Battling Bishops, finally beginning to prove their poten tial, snapped a six-game losing skid with a thrilling 57-55 Dixie Conference triumph over the se cond place Hornets of Lynchburg College on our home court. Coach Scairs squad, which lost six players in the past week due to academic and disciplinary troubles, went Into the game with only eight players, two added re cently from last year’s squad. This lack of numbers proved no problem to the Bishops, for when the game started they turned In one of their finest performances in gaining a vital conference win, one that wasn’t settled until the last fading se conds. Don Hines, playing his second game for Wesleyan, accounted for 20 points and cleared the boards for 15 rebounds while 6-4 fresh man, George Watson, playing the pivot for the first time, added 19 points and 10 rebounds to spark the victory. Wesleyan led at the half, 29-24, but the start of the se cond half the lead changed hands constantly until with 7:15 left the Bishops went ahead 45-44 and never trailed again. Forward Lloyd Nelson, holder of the team% best scoring av erage, aided Hines and Watson with 11 points, six of them com ing in the last three minutes, 6-3 Nelson also accounted for 12 rebounds. For the night, the Wesleyan trio of Watson, Nelson, and Hines scored 50 of the teamfe a7 points and grabbed 37 of the club’s 49 rebounds. Outstanding performance by Nelson and Watson. Despite 27-point performances by Lloyd Nelson and George Wat son, N. C. Wesleyan lost a close game to Methodist College of Fayetteville, 66-63. The game was a close battle all the way, with Wesleyan lead ing at the half 34-33. After shoot ing 60 per cent in the first half the Bishops shooting went cold in the second half and Metho dist took the lead early and held it until Wesleyan tied it at 57-57 with 1:50 left to play. The Bishops played just five men the entire game, while Char lotte substituted frequently to keep a fresh team.
